OK I'm trying to decide between the Marin Novato "urban" bike & the Hawk Hill SE "XC Mountain" bike.
What baffles me is the pricing of the Novato compared to the Hawk Hill SE.

The Novato is $740 CND, the Hawk Hill Se is $789 CND. It seems like you get more for your money with the Hawk Hill... or are the drivetrain upgrades on the Novato worth more than I think? The frames are very similar... both triple-butted Aluminum.

I'm leaning toward the Novato, but it seems like I'm getting ripped off. The LBS tells me to upgrade the Novato to the same discs as the Hawk Hill SE will add around $300 (even though it already has the appropriate hubs).

Main Novato "plusses" over Hawk:
- Deore shifters vs Alivio
- Nexave T401 vs Alivio Front Deraillier
- 9spd cassette vs 8spd

Main Hawk "plusses" over Novato:
- Marzocchi MZ Comp front suspension fork
- Hayes MX-2 mechanical disc breaks

By "plusses" I mean items that could increase the cost of the bike, not necessarily desirable features (ie the front suspension is a plus or a negative depending on intended use).
