Yup. The right, firm saddle and one could literally ride naked with no ill effect. Of course, not in winter...

As far as underwear for casual riding, I like the athletic trunk style shorts. They come in wicking tech fabrics with flatlock seams. Some have better seam placement than others but the flatlock seams haven't ever caused me discomfort. You can get them in different leg lengths to suit personal preference, thigh length, and your choice of outer clothing.[/QUOTE]

^This is what I do for shorter rides in regular clothes. I like the Champion C9 sport boxers from Target because they are relatively inexpensive. I do feel that the more expensive ones I have from UnderArmour, Nike, and Adidas are nicer but I prefer save those for other sporting activities.

I think the underwear material/weave itself is an issue - i.e. I think it's a bit coarse and irritating the main contact points particularly given my mass - 6'4" and over 250 lbs. My riding is generally less than 5 miles at a time so it seems padded shorts might be inconvenient overkill - don't want to have to change out of them after a relatively short ride to the gym etc. if I can avoid it.

Any suggestions for a type/brand of underwear that you think would do the trick?

Thanks.
Generally those big heavy padded saddles aren't doing you much good. I could go into it all but I will just leave this which is probably the best cycling resource out there: A Comfortable Bicycle Saddle

As far as undies, ExOfficio Give and Go are the only ones you will ever need and should ever wear. They are awesome for everyday wear but great for travel since they are lightweight, wicking and have Aegis Microshield to help with bacteria and keep the funk down. Always avoid cotton and other non-wicking materials.

One other useful thing to try is chamois (shammy) cream of some sort such as: Chamois Glide (goes on like deodorant) DZ Nuts or Mad Alchemy. I use them quite frequently down there because chafing is a big problem for me. I prefer Chamois Glide because of ease of application but DZ Nuts and Mad Alchemy always get great reviews and from folks I know that use it, they love it a lot.

Though honestly bike shorts are the way to go, there is many reasons for them and a big part is helping stop chafing, wicking away sweat and giving you a different bit of padding. That is why so many of us have recommended it!

I am a Clyde too. For five miles, I don't wear anything. Perhaps that comment could have an unintended meaning. Not trying to hawk any specific products- there are some that work better for my mAss. Duluth trading so called performance under wear worn under basket ball shorts when it is warm out or under baseball pants when it is cooler out - are a good combo. If it is real hot and humid, consider J&G Touring shorts - they work well and last long. I also prefer a leather saddle. Great bike fit very much helps the saddle feel.

I had bicycled a good bit prior to the purchase and knew I preferred some padding in a seat. I wanted to switch the Toupe out for a Sonoma. The shop employee implored me to give the Toupe a try for a week. I think in part because he didn't want to see a Sonoma on a Tarmac. I acquiesced. A week later I was returning the Toupe. I had bruises in my sit bone region and I don't bruise easily. The Sonoma became my favorite seat and I put them on all my bikes. I have recently bought an ISM Century and just the other day a Typhoon and think they will become my favorites.
I agree completely that everyone is different and each rider has to find what works for him/her. I also agree that the Toupe is the harsher of the two saddles that I am currently using but it is still quite comfortable for me even on relatively long rides. Perhaps if I had less padding on my arse I'd want a little more padding on the saddle. The older generation of the Avatar is absolutely perfect for me. A couple years ago the "updated" the Avatar. It's still quite good but not exactly the same as the previous version.
