Hmm, not sure exactly. We parked at Pine Grove Furnace and climbed up the ridge to where the AT crosses, and did a big loop. I endo'd on a rocky, rooty descent as we were coming back toward the cars.

No different than having your car towed and impounded after ignoring no parking signs. Pay the fine and get your vehicle back. And ... do you really believe that there were no signs posted?

It doesn't sound or read like the bikes are confiscated permanently, how many of those who responded read the whole article??

"Now they’re working with local government representatives in the hope of opening an alternative trail system through the area’s wilderness, beyond base property.

Meanwhile, those who have been ticketed and had their bikes confiscated have been told they will get their bikes back after they settle their tickets. That process could take up to 45 days.

Hiley said he and his group were forced to hike two miles back to their vehicles, wearing cycling shoes. He described to GrindTV that the trek was like a “the walk of shame.”

The trails at Quantico are good, but you can't just wander in, you need to show a military ID at the gate.

Cripes, as well as not having a clue about constitutional law, you don't know diddly about the area in question. There are signs present, and a fence around the entire area is as ludicrous a thought as could be posted about this. Its a huge, largely primitive, mostly desert area. If they posted armed guards around the perimeter, the public would scream bloody murder about the military taking over the entire state. There are reasons for areas being posted for no trespassing, and in this case safety is a big one, its not smart to mix military training using armor, Strykers, and such, as well as infantry squads, and the general public, regardless of if its mtb, horseback, etc.

Not a really smart post.

If there were signs, they could have been removed by vandals, since there seems to be some debate over whether or not there were signs in the first place. To that end, it would be the duty of the Marines to ensure that all such signage is clearly visible and, if it has been removed, that it be replaced as quickly as possible. It would also be better to place guards at the boundary at times when bike traffic is high to warn riders that, that beyond this point is military land and that they need to turn around and go back. Ignore them and you deserve whatever they decide to mete out as punishment.

I would suggest they go just a bit east and ride the north end of 29 Palms. There is a really cool impact area up there. A few rounds of 155 will get their average speed up quite a bit.

I think there are some constitutional experts in Oregon who might agree with you.

I used to surf Trestles in northern San Diego County when it was still part of the Camp Pendleton Marine base and not open to the public.

The Marines, jarheads as we called them, used to chase us in Jeeps. We'd run into the water and paddle out. There was nothing they could do about it, no way for them to stop us from surfing there.

No, it's the duty of a rider to know who's property they are on!

I live about a mile from these trails. I get what they're doing. However, there are zero signs stating what is and isn't government property. That trail on goes onto the base about 100 yards. There are even trail markers on the trails there. They could have better advertised the property lines. Almost none of the lines are marked with fencing, signage, or anything else. I don't necessarily have a problem with the cites, but I think a bike confiscation in addition was excessive. That should be reserved for a second offense.

And this isn't out in the middle of nowhere. This base is right in the middle of San Diego. This part in question is on the southeast part of the base.

Almost none or none? Huge difference. One sign should be sufficient for any adult looking to comply with the law, no offense.
Or are the marines lying when they stated the trails had signs?

*none. There are tons of trails that get close to or go on the base. None of them are marked that I've seen.

Trollololololol

funny how people on the east coast are arguing semantics when they don't even have a clue about this property and have never rode these trails.

I went to Ft. Indiantown Gap many times to train when I was an ROTC instructor at Princeton. I loved it there. If I recall there were some trails somewhere near but I never rode them, may be where you're talking about. Brought my road bike a couple of times for some rides. In the late 90's a couple of buddies and I cut some illegal trails on Ft. Bragg, in an area where nobody trains. Managed to get about four miles, it was pretty good. The whole area ended up getting cleared for a new main PX.

My feelings, exactly.
