Go to the Sheldon Brown website Sheldon Brown-Bicycle Technical Information and you will find a table there that shows exactly what width tires will fit a particular rim.

Pretty much just go to Sheldon Browns website always for everything! I go through it every so often just because it has so much useful information and cool tips and pictures and stories and all sorts of fun. Plus it is always important to remember people like him who are slowly diminishing. A lot of newer folks working in shops wouldn't know a lot of the stuff he knew and wouldn't really care as much about it and may not get the education is some of that old knowledge from the earlier days.

From Sheldon Brown's site,

for interior rim width x

recommended tire width is

1.45x-2x

Is 14 mm the interior width of your rim?

Seems you might be limited by the bike frame, what are you pedaling?

I didn't see than on SB's site. The wheel is 14-406, nominally written on the wheel itself. I have not measured it directly myself. With the above formula, I should be running tires in the nominal range of 21-28 width. Right now I've got a 35-406 in the back, and a 28- and a 35- tire, front and back. No problems, just wondering. I've also run a 38- tire too worth no problems. I think the formula is way too conservative.

Yes, SB tends to be conservative...

I would propose a 2.75 multiplier on the wide end. Ergo, on a 14- rim, the upper range of tire width should be around 39-.

You can try whatever you wish, but I can see as the diameter gets proportionately large and larger, at some stage the tire (with the inflated tube) might roll out of the rim during a turn and then you goose is cooked... YMMV

The best answer should come from the wheel manufacturer. Or Dahon.

I was, I've been talking about the width of the tire vis-a-vis the width of the rim for tires and rims of the same nominal diameter (406, 451, etc.)

Wel, that answer will not be coming. Plus there is nothing proprietary or inherently Dahon-esque about the rim. It's a rim.

Guess you are stuck with an Internet answer then.

Stuck? I posted the question on the internet. I was expecting from the get-go to get an 'internet' answer.
