More involved triple to double conversion question:

I've got a 105 Shimano 5500 triple crank and I would like to use it for a project as a double, but I noticed that it has raised mounting pillars for the granny ring that may get in the way if I try to use the 109mm BB for a double. Would it be OK to just dremel off those pillars? I'll never use it as a triple, and it's barely worth anything to sell...

I'd try it on your bike first. Then remove the triple mounting pillars if necessary. It should be fine.

If you'd rather use a double, there are lots of potential trading partners on these forums. I might even have a double I'd be willing to swap for your triple -- I could use one to get me up some of the hills around here.

Open to that! I have the BB for this, 68mm. I probably couldn't get so lucky, but need 70mm.

You sure? What kind of bike? 70 mm says Italian BB shell to me.

Indeed. I almost don't want to say, but if you promise not to tell anyone... I'm going to throw these on my incoming Merckx frame until I can afford Campy. Embarrassing I know. But the parts will just be sitting there, and the frame all sad, wanting to be ridden!

I wouldn't bung up a perfectly good triple; I'd find a double and save the triple for when they come back into style.
