Frame too big

I've had my road bike for a few years but recently started to use it much more and I have a strong feeling that the reach is too far. My height is about 5'10" and my inseam is around 89 cm or 35 inches which means I have a pretty short torso for my height. The frame of my current bike is 56 cm and a couple sizing calculators online recommended 52-53. I'm sure those aren't extremely accurate but they all recommended something a few centimeters smaller than what I have. Should I try a shorter stem, or get a new bike that fits me?

What size is the current stem? Can you post a side picture of you on the bike, slightly leaning against the wall, outward foot on the pedal in the 6 o clock position. That would help us.

Someone 5'10" usually rides a 56. I'm 6' and ride a 58. Bike fit is an elusive thing. Try a shorter stem.

5'10" with as short torso ... you do probably need a 54, max. Being a short-torsoed, ape-armed monstrosity myself, I can say for certain that all those "Standard Sizing Chart" measurements are meaningless.

Try a shorter stem if your current one is over about 80 mm, but if you plan to ride a lot, consider selling the bike and buying one that really fits you.

Obviously buying a stem is a lot cheaper than buying a bike.

Another good thing ... visit local bike shops, tell them you aren't sure if you need a new bike, and ask if you can sit on a few different sizes. naturally they will probably tell you you need a new bike---it is their business--but if you sit on a few different frames you can not only get an idea how the different sizes and geometries suit you, you could possibly find a set-up which just feels right.

As always, I will recommend Bike Fit Calculator | Find Your Bike Size | Competitive Cyclist to figure might work for your specific build, and then going to various manufacturers' websites and looking at their geometry pages to see what the different numbers mean.

Of course the numbers might match and the real bike might not fit ... but the research might narrow things down a bit.

Also ... if you go to a bike shop and they treat you right and you find what you like but decide to buy it elsewhere, buy a water bottle and a tire or something there, just to be nice.

If you don't find anything you like, then (in my book) it is okay not to spend any money, because they are not guaranteed a sale ... but if they show you a bike you think is almost perfect and you decide to get the absolutely perfect one online, maybe throw them a few bucks in sales just to be nice.
