Help me understand this

I belong to a fairly good sized bicycle club, that has several very dedicated riders who compete. Yesterday, one in particular entered a mountain bike race in the Cat 1 division and got second place. While most members congratulated him for an outstanding performance, one member asked him how much money he lost after travel expenses, food, entry fees, etc. I for the life of me don't understand why someone would rain on a fellow club members awesome day.
Am I being too judgemental on this guy? I was one of the members who thought he did great and said so.
So, help me understand how people can see bad in good things.
Thanks

Are you aware that humans are still a form of primate? What would you expect from a bunch of chimps who lack empathy? Be thankful that most congratulated the guy and forget about the rest.

Yeah, it may cost a lot, but the experience is priceless. The guy's asking about the cost due to envy.

Asperger's Syndrome?

Maybe this person is contemplating a similar pursuit and wanted to know the financial considerations.

Or, some people are just tactless.

Someone could have replied to the guy, asking him how much he spent on his bike, when he could stay home watching TV and save his money.

Jealousy. He knows that he could never do it but can't admit it, so he's making up excuses.

Good point. I was too quick to judge in my post that it was jealousy.

No. You're not being too judgmental. Some people feel they need to know the price of everything but have no understanding of the value of anything. They don't even realize that they are two different things.

My son-in-law has tens of thousands of dollars tied up in fishing equipment. Most of the fish that he catches he immediately releases back. I doubt your club member would understand that either. I feel sorry for him.

He tries to be the club clown but most people are not amused. Here is a quote of his post from today on the club website....

"For sale Men's Bib Shorts. Heavily Used, see through spandex! Looking for good home! Make offers!"

His trademark comment is "I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night"... like a worn out record. Sad thing is that I can not use an ignore feature so his nonsense is always popping up. Mind you, this is an almost 60 year old man!

Someone always brings money into every situation. No biggie, it's just how some people converse. I might've wondered what it all cost too, but I wouldnt actually have asked.

That's just probably the guys sense of humor. Those comments aren't in good taste but that sounds like the way he is. I doubt he's intentionally insulting but that's the way some people take it. My advise is just ignore his statements like that and write it off as poor judgement.

Seems like the guy was being rude on purpose. Suitable comebacks:
"More than you can afford, pal."
"It cost a lot, but I'm loaded."

Lighten up. I think it's funny. I have persued bike racing and other activities where I invest a lot of time and money. Is there a pay off? Personal accomplishment, friends made, etc. Monetary not so much.

Also this club member may have been commenting on the prize money. Like, "You spent how much on travel, food, gas, you win the race, and this is the reward?"

Now I'm wondering how much did it cost? Triathletes pay a lot too, maybe the most of all types of bicycle races. While I'm at it, how much does it cost to have kids join soccer, swim, gymnastics, karate?
