1992 Specialized Stumpjumper
Huge Specialized fan. Currently have a 1999 Specialized Hard Rock Comp FS, Specialized Rockhopper Sport (rigid), Rockhopper FS, a 1998 Gary Fisher Aquila, a Bianchi Grizzly & an Ibis SS (rigid). Just started mountain biking about 2 years ago & am an official addict (at 50 years old). Looking at a gray 1992 Stumpjumper Pro. Frame is a perfect fit at 20". Here is the parts list: Shimano Lx cantilever brakes, shifters, cranks, rear hub, rims Mavic M400, Shimano LX front & back derailleurs, Specialized leather seat, Specialized stem & bars, Tioga Psycho Edge 26x1.95 tires, Shimano pedals & new cables & housings. So the price is $250.00. Any input would be valued. Should I pull the trigger?

Pics would help. I'm a huge fan of specialized mtbs as well and own two, a 1988 stumpjumper comp and a 1991 team. I'd say $250 is fair if the bike is in good shape. I really like the grey. The bike though is fully valued; the price is at the top end of the range. I've picked up mtbs of this quality for less.

Yes, it does seem at the high end price-wise, but I'm having a hard time finding a Stumpy from that time period in my frame size. I don't like aluminum or the M2 & other alloys they have used over the years. Just thinking I should strike while the iron is still hot. If I purchase the bike & can figure out how to put pics up I will post them, after riding for several miles of course. Thanks for the input!

Besides the value of quality vintage MTBs is bound, IMHO, to go up. Right now they go for a lot less than an equivalent road bike (except for some of the older vintage mtbs from the early 80s and custom bikes). The specialized, treks, etc. don't tend to go for much. I picked up a 1993 Trek 950 in immaculate shape for $125. But vintage mtbs are excellent bikes and sooner or later, the higher end ones will increase in value.

If you don't buy the bike, a year from now you will have spent the $250.00 on something else but you won't be able to remember what it was.
