Wool does have wicking ability, and remains a thermal insulator even wet. Cotton absorbs much more water, does not wick as well, and when wet more readily conducts heat from the body. Given the choice to wear in cold wet weather, wool wins.

I find one thing about a cotton t-shirt is that it doesn't need to be washed so regularly on tour. Yes, synthetics have gotten better, but still... and wool has a kinda funky sheepy smell to begin with :/

I find that people who regularly wear wool don't notice the smell, sort of like dog owners who don't think their homes/cars/clothes smell

oh f' it while I'm at it, meat eaters and milk drinkers smell funky too!

vegans fart a lot tho'

edit: yes I'm a little bit tipsy... bank holiday tomorrow

Wool traps heat and moisture, period. Even wet wool is a great insulator as it continues to stagnate any thermal or moisture movement. Wool is a great product! It just doesn't perform like you imagine it does.

It's ok to love wool IMHO. I am a big fan of wool myself. But it has no magical abilities... it's just wool.
I just wear what works for me and is comfortable. Not fashion at all. My very thin merino wool shirts work great at moisture management. YRMV. Out.

Weather improvements aside, I tried the cotton over method and it worked well. It is now a regular option. Thank you.
