[h=3]Absolutely not![/h]If a person needs a bike to ride, they can go buy a cheap used bike off Craigslist and resell it without losing a dime. To ask is imposing and rude.

It depends on who was asking but if it were somebody I trusted, I would lend them any bike in my stable except for the one I use most of the time.
Edit:
I even lent out my bike to my niece some years back because she was living with us and needed it to get to her job. She was not the most responsible person in the world, and I was not thrilled when one day, she left the bike in a back room at her job, which was an ice cream/fast food place. Apparently she decided to go out with some co workers after her shift and got a ride with someone to the place they were going, then home. Fortunately, nothing happened to the bike, but I was not thrilled.

I have loaned out my Bike Friday single bikes for use by friends. Never the tandems or recumbents, although I do let folks take "trial rides" around the neighborhood on my trike.

I would be concerned by the fact that the neighbour hadn't planned ahead to arrange a bicycle for the event, and obviously hadn't done any cycling at all, and was therefore completely and utterly inexperienced as a cyclist. The apparently off-handed way the question was asked would also concern me ... as though the neighbour is asking to borrow a $10 broom to sweep the drive way or something.
On the other hand, if my father were making the trip to Australia, and had expressed an interest in doing some cycling here, we would make arrangements for there to be a bicycle available for him ... whether it is one of ours or one we've rented or whatever.

Hellz, no.
We have a spare bike for that.
Maaaaybe if it was someone who had some idea of how to use a bike (shifting).

If we were going on a ride together, then yes.
I would not just loan out my bike for someone to take if I wasn't coming with them. There's too many things to go wrong there. Bent wheels. Flats. Derailleurs getting bent. Etc. Seriously, you can buy a new adult bike at Walmart for $80 if you need a bike.

LOL. My old Rockhopper is with my brother-out-law, and has been for 10 years. It's a loan, until he gets another bike (I might buy him a bike to get this Rockhopper back). I bought this bike new back in 1988. However, I will not loan out my favorite bikes.

Old mountain bikes are cheap but I did have to buy new tires and a new front wheel so the bike probably cost me a bit north of $100. I like keeping a loaner bike in the garage, along with my regular riders. This is a 3 x 7 thumbshifter, rigid fork specialized with one of those cool early 90s paint jobs.

This.
I don't understand all the reactions here. It's just a bike. If the bike is one of my best I'm sure whoever borrows it knows the value, how to ride it, and how to take care of it. For example the person borrowing it knows how to ride with clipless pedals.

no. I would tell them that west end cycles here in the Houston area rents quality bicycles and to be sure an clean it when the ride is over... west end charges a cleaning fee if the bike is returned dirty.

Depends on the person. One of my regular riding partners and good buddies. Yes.
Anyone else, it would depend on their experience.
If experienced, I have a fuji back-up bike with full 105.
If they're newbies, I've got a couple hybrids and a fixed gear that I gladly loan out.

Bar Ends Forever
Every time I let someone borrow my old Raleigh they come back with a flat. I've never even got a flat on my own with the bike.

Nope, I am kind of particular about my bikes since I spent so much time and money modifying them to fit my specific needs. If I had a bike just chilling in the shed unused then I would loan that out, but it would have to be something I could afford to lose.

No problem. I encourage it.
Right now I have a couple guitars, two kayaks and a microscope lent out. If anyone wants to use one of my bicycles...just need to ask. I even install my bike rack for them if it fits.
Not all altruistic. Best investment I've ever made. Got a lead on the house we live in...saved several thousand dollars. Another guy came over and helped me install a skylight on our sun room. Since the new year have got a couple of free dinner theater tickets and a playoff football invite. My partner and I were invited to stay at a nice condo in Maui...another time at a place in the nearby Rockies. Received leads on work contracts.
Anyways. People are generally nice and like to reciprocate. I haven't needed it yet but recently a young guy I lent a guitar to offered an after hours brake job for free on our Jeep.
Then again, my bikes aren't worth several thousand dollars. Unlike others here I never got a bike back in bad condition other than a needing a tweak here or there...not really any trouble as I like showing folks how to adjust brakes, align the bars, etc.

Loaned a bike of mine to a friend after his commuter was stolen. He used it until he could replace his. Not the scenario you described but still.

An interesting study might be the correlation between waving, loaning out bikes, and yelling to get off my lawn.
