Breaking in shoes
I just got a pair of Sidi's on ebay for a great deal off the retail price. I was pleased with the purchase, until my first ride over the weekend. Once I got off the bike, I could barely walk my arches hurt so bad. I'm messing with the cleat placement a bit to see if I can get them in the right spot. Do these shoes require any sort of breaking in period? I'd hate to have to get rid of a great deal and go back to my old lace up Shimanos.

Sounds like they either don't fuit, or you aren't strapping it down tight enough... or your cleat placement is out of whack.

Does your arches hurt while pedaling? Cycling shoes are broken in while pedaling, not walking, as they aren't meant for walking.

All four pair of my cycling shoes were comfortable right from the start.
I'd check your cleat placement if I were you ... then try insoles or arch supports or something ... and if that doesn't work, maybe you need to go with a different brand.

Painful arches could indicate plantar fasciaitis; try thoroughly stretching the achilles tendons several times a day. Plantar fasciaitis is inflammation of the connective tissue in the soles of the feet, and people with either high arches or flat feet are more susceptible to it. Mine is managed by prescription insoles and stretching, and cycling had nothing to do with it, as I developed the condition during a period when I was not cycling. A sure symptom is pain in the arches upon taking the first steps upon getting out of bed in the morning, or after sitting for a long time. Do the new shoes have less arch support than your old ones, or did you just suddenly increase your usual number of miles ridden?

I think if your having pain when riding or numbness than the shoes probably don't fit right. Check cleat placment before giving up. When I got fitted for my bike the fitter actually fitted me for cleat placement on shoes I was using. good luck
