I think it's because they're embarrassed to be riding with someone with large gaudy advertising in full kit.

He'd still be overflowing with hubris for bringing it up.

This is the mentality that turned me off cycling in my teens. Later on I realized it was endemic in nearly all leisure pursuits.

When they get like that I just nerd out about what a great value the new Sora R3000 stuff is, or how it has only been a few months since I got back off the couch. They don't seem capable of fitting that sort of talk into their spiel.

I always like to converse with people who have the same interest as me.I usually do the listening cause I believe you can always learn a thing or three lol. There are a lot of socially awkward individuals such as myself and I find at times that the darnedest things come out of my mouth when I feel severely awkward. When I'm out and about I don't like to boast to strangers about what I have or do any type of one upmanship. The only boasting I may seem to do is right here on the site with the type of bikes I have in my signature and bike section but thats only between others who have the same interests as I do on this site.

When I was attacked on my bike last April, everyone asked me what happened and how bad was I injured. I'd say 9 out of 10 people would then tell me about how they had a even worse experience on a bike, running or even a car wreck. It always fascinates me that no matter how bad or good you've done at something, someone is quick to point out how much worse or better they've been at it.

We used to DREAM about moving to the middle of the road from the drainage ditch that we grew up in.

( It's not a racing tandem just a comotion periscope scout with road bars).

How long you've had it, he asks. Since 2008 but moved to this state in 2009, i answer and still only has less than 2000 miles. (its like pulling teeth to get my wife or son to ride with me and i ride my mtb or roadbike more). he says, i ride everyday here and I've never seen you guys before(as if doubting the length of time I've owned it). he says, you know how much miles i got on my bike. i guess 10,000. he says 120to 130,000.

while I'm happy he rides regularly, i don't really care. in fact, i always tell my wife when i retire, i want to be like the older guys that ride everyday and drop me all the time.

iwished him a good ride and went about unloading our bike.

You do care. It obviously bothered you enough to explain the entire thing and prompt a discussion. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here venting it off.

And why do you care so much that he cares? You care so much that you even bothered posting about it!

When they learn that I cycle, they always tell me about their motorcycle accident, or their friends' motorcycle accident, or the motorcycle accident they saw when they were stationed at an Air Force base in Texas in 1973.

I think we're all agreeing that you will always have the one-upper in whatever sport or hobby you get into.

I ran across my most memorable one-upping story on the Ferrari forums some years ago. Picture the escalation:
Guy 1 - Look at the used Ferrari I just bought.
Guy 2 - Look at my new Ferrari.
Guy 3 - Look at my two new Ferraris.
Guy 4 - Look at my new Ferrari parked next to an older Ferrari that I'm restoring.
Guy 5 - Look at the new monster garage I built to house my new Ferrari and my two Ferrari restoration projects.
Guy 6 - Also building a new house and monster garage for my Ferraris, but I flew in Italian artisans to fabricate the bricks for my home by hand.
etc.

The one-upping was fun to read!
