want to upgrade to road bike but hate to lose gear ratio

I'm currently riding a schwinn mass market comfort bike (skyliner). been riding daily for about 2700 miles over the past year. i like climbing hills, but in doing so i feel like i need the 24 front/34 rear gear ratio that i currently have. the bike shop guy said that i could go to a 30 front/24 rear road bike and not notice the difference. that seems like a lot of gear ratio change to be made up for just with thinner tires and a 10 pound lighter bike. Thoughts?

My Bianchi Vlope has 30 front to 34 rear so I know you can do that.

If you miss the mountain gearing, you can always put a mountain 22/32/44 crankset on your road bike.
