Sad News - Volagi founder Robert Choi

I've sung the praises of Volagi bikes and the company that builds them so often, people might have started to wonder if I was a shill. No, I am just a very happy customer not just because of the bike, not just because of the company, and not just because of the service, but also have had some contact with chief engineer and co-founder Robert Choi.

Yesterday Robert was seriously injured in a crash with a car in Ogden Utah, and at last update, Robert was in intensive care in a coma. An add-on update said "showing small signs of improvement."

Thoughts.

1) Be careful out there, people.

2) Robert is an amazing guy.

Innovative and meticulous engineer; used to be one of the top bike designers at Specialized before founding his own company to build a bike Specialized wasn't interested in. I love my Volagi and I'm very happy with the service I've gotten from the company. Once I called for help chasing down an odd little sound that I couldn't figure out. Robert spent about an hour on the phone with me and was delighted when we finally figured it out and silenced it - he likes a quiet bike, too. Not many bike companies were you call with an admittedly trivial problem and get the chief engineer and president on the line for an hour.

Accomplished cyclist, too. Frequent participant in the ultra distance Hoodoo 500. Was training to break a world record for ascent on a bicycle.

3) Now I am actually going to be a shill.
There likely to be a lot of unforeseen expenses coming up for Robert and his family. Here's the GoFundMe if you feel inclined: https://www.gofundme.com/RCroad2recovery

Get well, Robert.

I just became aware of the Volagi brand. Very interested in the bike for endurance rides. Then saw the news of the accident. Is there any update on the medical condition of Mr. Choi?

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Building your own brand/design of bike is no small feat.

I've got a friend who's also a industry insider here in Ogden. He said the company is basically selling everything off and preparing to shutdown. Not what the website indicated last time I looked at it.

My buddy has also picked up a bike from them seriously marked down as they clear out stock and seems to love it.

The accident is quite a shame. That is a very low density traffic area he was hit in. It's basically an older military depot ( I worked for 6 years there) that is now an industrial depot. I would think it's a safe place to ride with lots of roads and no real traffic. For some reason they put in some roundabouts a few years ago at some intersections and if I remember correctly he was hit in one of these. Such a shame.

Same thing today - it's not just "loading in new pictures and pricing," if it's down this long. Very sad to lose the efforts of Mr. Choi, and to have to terminate the business.

Read this as well, he's slowly doing better but brain injuries are never cut and dried.

If your news about Volagi shutting down superceeds this I defer to you.

Im looking to get a frame. Just wondering how, in light of recent developments. Did your buddy go directly to the store?

Here's an update from last month:
https://www.gofundme.com/RCroad2recovery

This week marks the end of the 6th and into the 7th week of Robert's recovery, my how time flies!

He moved last week to a facility which focuses on rehabilitation and has made some great progress! He has been able to start eating solid food, walking with assistance and doing some cognitive exercises like word problems and long division/multiplication for short intervals. He took quite a keen interest in the election and made sure to get out and vote in his wheelchair.

He is stubborn and optimistic, two traits which are generally helpful in the situation, but we have been reminding him of where he was 6 weeks ago and not to push himself too much. While he loves to always come in first place, this is not a race but a slow and steady process.

As always, we appreciate so much the kind words of support and encouragement, the stories of how you know Robert and your financial backing of his Road to Recovery. While he has amazed us with his progress, he still has quite a ways to go before he his 100% himself again, if he reaches that milestone.

We are so glad to have him still here with us!

Ok, I got a little more info. They are still open and running. Not sure why the site is down. They have obtained additional funding to help keep things going. And Robert is improving.

@jamesdak, thanks for the update, Mr. Choi seems to have the determination to overcome his injuries. Hopefully, he will continue to progress towards a level that he is used to functioning at. It sure sounds that way from IGH reply, as well as yours.

Update 9
Posted by Nicole Choi

Well, as usual, I would like to apologize for not getting more updates for all of you who have supported Robert. The last couple months have been busy with getting the business up and running, moving him from Utah down to Arizona and continuing the healing from his accident. For those of you who are his Facebook friends, you already know he has been out riding again; heading the siren call of the road and his dream of breaking a Guinness World Record.

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 12th, Robert set out for a long distance ride from Arizona to Northern California. Unfortunately the desert heat was too much and he suffered some seizures while on his way to Palm Springs and was brought into the hospital late night on Thursday, April 13th. Alex flew down from Sacramento to see him in the hospital and bring him up to Sacramento to recuperate. In a few days he seemed back to normal and was ready to get back to Arizona to complete some bike orders.

On the morning of Wednesday, April 18th, he had additional seizures and was taken into the hospital. He has continued to have seizures off and on since Wednesday and the doctors are mystified since all of the tests they have run are showing him as healthy and without additional injury.

He is in a hospital in Sacramento with Alex and his girlfriend Drea attending to him. I will be flying up there in the morning to keep him company and give Alex and Drea a reprieve from the last week they have been caring for him.

I wish I had better news to share with all of you. He had been doing well and seemed back to his motivated, athletic self. Any prayers, positive thoughts and well-wishes are greatly appreciated! And thank you, again, for all who have donated to this campaign, as it has allowed Alex to travel to see Robert, for Robert's medical care and some of his additional needs.

We are hoping this time is just a minor setback, as is common with traumatic brain injuries, and that with some rest and recovery, he will be ready to fight the good fight!

~ Nicole, Robert's daughter

@IGH, Thanks for posting the update on Robert, from Nicole. I am praying the doctors can find the cause of these siezures quickly. Stay strong please Nicole, and continue to update everyone when possible. Cycling needs men like Robert badly, now more than ever.
