Who knew a broken chain could be so funny?!
- Anecdotal Warning Inbound -
Background: Over the summer I bought a quick link so that I could adjust my chain length since my chain was too long when I first measured it. I had undone the link multiple times in the interim.
Fast forward three months: So I recently replaced my chain with an older yet less worn out chain that I salvaged from my other bike a few months ago while still using the same quick link. I then decide to test the shifting at night around my apartment complex. After shifting the chain up and down the chainrings I hear a *snap" and find my chain broken and lodged between my seatstays.
After removing my chain I find one side of a link but not the other, so I walk outside looking to find the other end to find the other end to my quick link with no luck. So then I come back inside, look at my chain on the floor, and proceed to internally scream and laugh at the same time:

I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like your chain originally had 2 quick links, one of which opened and the other is still there. If so, you're still out half a link.
Or a regular link broke, not the quick link.

So to clarify (because I didn't want to give it away) is that I ASSUMED that since my chain broke the cause was my quick link. I went looking for the quick link because I thought that is what broke. I only had one quick link.

It's only funny if you crash.

As I recall KMC links are labeled "reusable", but in the fine print somewhere I read that they suggest replacing after it has been opened 3 times.

So, will you add a second quick-link to fix the chain? Or just get a new chain?

I have only had one chain break, and it was at the quick link. That wasn't funny because it was my fatbike and I had to walk 7 miles over a mountain.
Someone once told me that almost all chain breaks happen on a well-worn chain. I'm pretty good at changing chains, did you measure this one?

EDIT: Measured 4 full links = ~4.3 inches. So I think I have a month or two left in the chain.
This chain that broke had about 2 months of regular wear and sat around from March till now when I put it back on.

You'll find that it happens more often as you get older.

my chain break happened with a KMC link, but blaming it might be unfair. The chain was on my fatbike, and although it wasn't work at all, there was plenty of surface rust due to salt
