dedhed, I actually hung out with friends at that park when in High School. Later I learned that Major Richard Bong was known as the Army Air Corps "Ace of Aces". He shot down over 40 enemy planes, confirmed, and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was pulled stateside, as his high profile made it unwise to risk having the enemy shoot him down, and was made a test pilot. He died when his plane malfunctioned (or he forgot or couldn't switch to the auxiliary fuel pump) on takeoff, and crashed in North Hollywood, Ca (the test facility for the P-80 Shooting Star jet plane was in Burbank). The plane crashed in a field at Oxnard St & Satsuma Ave.
While I sure didn't know it when I was, well, bonging along at the park, the man was a national hero. His death was reported on the front page of all major newspapers, which is remarkable as news of his death shared the day with another major story: the first atomic bomb being detonated over Hiroshima.
I thought then that his name was funny (its Swedish, and one of his nicknames was "Bing"). Just didn't want to let the unique name obscure a very impressive American.
On edit, I see CV-6 is also aware of Major Bong's amazing achievements. CV-6, did you serve on CV-6?

There are a few unusual road names on the Withlacoochee Trail. Here's one on the southern portion of the trail. It's usually only the locals who pronounce it correctly.

Another childhood favorite was Horseblock and Granny, off the Long Island Expressway around Medford. Used to be a sign visible from the highway that read Horseblock and Granny. Always cracked me up. Apparently the signs have changed so Google street view only shows Horseblock Road now.
Here in Bumpkinsville, we have a Peckerwood Ridge Rd. which I pass on many rides. And I often ride on Randolph-Goodluck Rd.

BTW, I never actually got a chance to stop there. We were always passing between NYC and Shelter Island way back when (late 1960s-early '70s). But Horseblock and Granny remain part of the family lore.

In the Rockland, Maine area is a street named "LMNOP Lane". A lady who was a retired grade school teacher built a house there and part of that was a short road that led to the house (and had to have a name). She was allowed to pick a name and that is what she chose - think learning the alphabet.

Heh! I shoulda known I'd shake a local outta the woodwork to correct me on the actual location of Horseblock and Granny!
BTW, I never actually got a chance to stop there. We were always passing between NYC and Shelter Island way back when (late 1960s-early '70s). But Horseblock and Granny remain part of the family lore.

Mmm, late 60'd/early 70's- the Island was beautiful back them. (I grew up there in that time period, just the next town to the west). Now, most of us former "Lon Guylanders" are scattered all over the country.
