There's your answer. Your wife has to be invested in the bike. She has to be the one with the final say on picking it out.

I selected a nice older road bike for my wife a long time ago. It had Shimano SPD clipless pedals, if I recall which was a bit too advanced for her. It ended up collecting dust in the basement. And I ended up selling it. So definately try to take her and the baby along and let her ride the bike before purchase, if possible. Also, if you know her size, then don't be afraid of local Ebay and Craigslist postings. Give the seller a call and schedule a time to go over and see the bike. That's how I got the old road bike. You can get some nice deals there as well. However, I agree with going to Performance if there is one near you. I wish there was one in north NJ. Also REI like mentioned above is a good place for bikes.

Note: I am a recumbent owner. Mostly...
All upright bikes are pretty much alike, except that the really expensive ones are lightweight--which does nothing to improve the riding comfort.
The most comfortable "mostly" upright bikes I've heard of so far is the RANS crank-forward bikes. Prices start at around $1700. I've had a RANS Fusion for 10+ years now; it is the only upright bike I own.
There's other cheaper bikes that are kinda-sorta like that. But they work like crap.
A bicycle that hurts to ride is no bargain at any price, and the #1 reason that people don't ride the normal bikes they own is because of the riding discomfort involved.
You can go cheap if you want--lots of people do--but the money you saved won't make your butt hurt any less (nor will it keep her riding).

Get her one she will ride. My wife bought a rather expensive new bike a couple of years ago to ride with me, and after perhaps three rides, it was retired to the garage, where it still hangs today.

Same here. She told me after a few rides she found it uncomfortable on a road bike. I am 46 and have ridden road bikes for 30+ years while she is 52 and has had road bikes for 3 years. Maybe when laying out the money ask if after a day or two it could be exchanged for a different style if it is not liked. My LBS will do this if there is no damage.

Over the years I bought my wife 3 DF bikes. She never rode any of them much at all. Then I bought her a trike, and she likes it and rides it a lot.
