Hanging from a hook

Can hanging a bike from a single hook on the front tire damage the bike/wheel over time?

No. I've had bikes hanging for years with no apparent damage.

If a bike can be damaged by hanging from its own weight....you probably don't want to put 60-100KG of human mass on top of it.

No problem at all, though I've heard concerns about bikes with hydraulic brakes and hanging them.

My daily commuting bike has been stored hung by the front wheel for decades. I have noticed that my average speed has dropped over the last 20 years, but likely not connected

That's exactly how many bicycle shops store bikes that are for sale or in for repair or waiting for pickup. Not much chance of damage to a wheel on a hanging bike at all.

Cheers

I hang three bikes in a corner of the garage.

In the numerous 'bike hanging' threads over the years, have there been any valid concerns listed, other than related to hydraulic brakes or oil-filled suspension forks?

Supposedly there are aero, high-profile rims where the "aero" part of the rim is fragile enough to make damage from hanging somewhat realistic.

And I think I read about some unlucky chap who managed to snag a spoke on the hook.

The inward tension in each spoke is several times larger than the weight of the bike.
Unless you scratch the rim, structurally the wheel won't even notice that it's carrying the bike.

I would think it a possibility to get some fretting corrosion where the hook and rim touch.

well, the air will run to the bottom of the tire...

But seriously, hooks tend to be coated so there shouldn't be any potential for hook to rim corrosion.

No as long as the hook is the normal rubber coated kind.

just beware of hydraulics and being upside down but a one wheel hang is just fine. Have at it!

Only if you never ride it. It will wither away from loneliness if it doesn't get ridden.

I think bikes with carbon rims aren’t suppose to be hung from a hook. At least that’s what the LBS told us when we bought my wife’s tri-bike. I installed a Steady Rack which is a dream to use.

Wrong... i've had my bikes hung from hooks for years.

If a Zipp wheel can handle my fat a$$ on it hitting an occasional pot hole, it can easily handle the weight of a 14# bike.

It depends on the rim. If the carbon is structural it's likely fine, given that the entire bike is <20lbs. There are few rims with carbon fairings, which should not be hung, since the fairing has no structure.

If you are going to hang them side by side, think 14". Hooks 14" out from the wall, 14" apart and staggered in height 14". (Lower hooks so your longest, heaviest bike(s) hand 2 or 3" off the floor) The handlebars will overlap but not interfere. The hoist for the heavy bikes is easy: wheelie the bike, roll it up to the hook and do a 3" lift. HOising the light bikes 2' isn't much harder.

This is assuming you are going to park the bikes with the rear wheel on the wall like the bike was ready to ride straight up the wall.

Are you implying that the extra 7# (1/2 the total 14# weight) is the difference between no damage and damage?

Since I have 4 bikes hanging, from single hooks, behind the double hooks, my carbon road bike is hung by the rear wheel only during the winter when my carbon CX bike is currently being used and hung in front on the 2 hooks.

The reason for 2 hooks is so I better ground clearance.

The LBS I got my bike from hangs all sorts of expensive bike with carbon wheels from the rear only. it saves a lot of floor space.

I would think the warning about hanging carbon wheels is that some lame sort of person could delaminate the rim by slamming it to a metal hook and then hanging from the bike like a monkey.

Carbon fiber is a solution full of problems. But I do not think this would be one of them.

Is it possible to find a more environmentally caustic bicycle material than carbon fiber? Probably but I should be scared to ask.
