Don't be cheap unless you have a cheap phone. I take care of my iPhone and have this on both bikes.

Not much! There's cheap and foolishly cheap. I'm cheap but usually not foolishly cheap. I would not trust the integrity of a simple plastic holder to hold even a cheap mobile phone when you can find oodles of really well engineered ones for under $10. It costs way too much to repair or replace a broken phone.

I think you'll find having your phone on the handlebars and bright enough you can see it in the sun with sunglasses will drain the battery quite fast...
But I wouldn't use that, and I do own cheap cellphones. If I had to have the cellphone in front of me and useable, I'd look for something like this: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Zefal-Bic...e-Bag/45082281
I keep mine in my back jersey pocket. Quick to grab if I need it, otherwise protected and out of the way, but with still good GPS accessibility.

Check out the Delta phone mounts. I snagged one recently for an iPhone 4s for only $3. Works great. Doesn't block the screen or hinder access to controls like the rubber band mounts. Came with adapters for threadless stem caps or for handlebars -- I needed both rubber shims for my handlebar but it works fine.

For the most part, I use enclosed mounts that give some waterproofing. But, they aren't fully without faults either. It is harder to read them or press buttons/screen touch controls through the plastic mounting. Plus, I ruined one zipper so far.

I have one Samsung S4 Mini that I use as a bike computer. I have an extended battery in it. For a 1-2 hour ride, I'll just keep it on (NoScreenOff utility). For longer rides, I set the screen time-out to 30 seconds or a minute, then turn on the screen briefly to check my progress then let it shut off again by itself (too hard to reach the screen off button with my phone holder).

That thing looks awfully flimsy, and if they're selling for $1 I wouldn't expect them to last long. Since parts of it stretch to cover the corners of the phone, I'm guessing they'd wear out before long, likely right when you go over a bump and dumps your phone on the hard pavement.
