Small Dent in Top Tube

Just got my bike back from the shop after getting the front wheel trued post low speed encounter between my girlfriend's bike and the pavement. Other than the wheel, the only damage to the bike was to the left hand shifter (which was scratched by contact with the pavement). Halfway home, looking in the rear view mirror, I noticed a dent (that I had not noticed before) in the top tube. I pulled into a 7-11 parking lot to check it out, and it looks like someone in the shop lost control of the handlebars and they slammed into the top tube, leaving a dent. I know for a fact that there was not a dent there when I dropped the bike off.

I am assuming that the bike is still rideable - it's a steel bike and it's more of a dimple than a dent... But I am so freaking aggravated!!!

considering that to true a wheel all they would have had to do was remove the wheel from the frame it seems unlikely they would have dented it, rather than something from the crash

Didn't say they did it while they were fixing the wheel. But the shop had my bike for three days. And I would have noticed a dent because I wipe my bike down after every ride.

I agree with redlube. It's unlikely this happened at the shop as you're only going to dent a steel tube from body weight falling on it and the bars slamming against it.

So unless someone at the shop was riding your bike and wrecked it, it's probably from the crash.

Yes, it's perfectly rideable.

That's all I was truly concerned about - whether or not the bike was rideable.

Top tube dents are common, and as you note, don't make the bike unrideable. They likely just assumed the dent had been there since time immemorial and ignored it.

Since you had a minor crash that was serious enough to throw a wheel out of true and scratch the shifter it is just as likely that you got the dent in the crash. It actually takes a lot of force to throw a properly built wheel out of true.

I believe I said "That's all I was truly concerned about - whether or not the bike was rideable."

The horse is dead and my spleen is vented.
