best time of year to buy a new bike?

When is the best time of year to buy a new bike for the cheapest cost. I have heard that it was fall, because things are starting to slow down and the LBS are trying to get rid of their bikes before winter, and I have also heard at the end of the year-closeouts on all 2005 models, etc. Also, is there a good time of month, like car salesmen have a monthly quota to meet, is it the same with bikes?

THanks

I got a killer deal on my Specialized Roubaix Pro last September. It was a 2004 leftover, and got it for the amazing price of $3150.

October worked for me. $500 less than the new model year when it came out.

The later in the year should get you better deals. But the longer you wait the fewer that will be left to choose from. I happened to get lucky and found a 2004 model in my size in late April. I got a excellant deal!!

I got an incredible deal about 2 months ago at Performance. All the 2004's were marked down to what they claim was their lowest price and there seemed to be lots of great buys. Plus, one weekend they were giving 20% in rebates (vs. the usual 10%) to Performance Team members. I was in the store last week and the one I bought is about 25% more now.

Whenever it starts getting cold in your area and people stop riding (and stop going into bike shops).

In Houston, many of the bigger bike shops have big sales the last week of August and the first week of September. One "big volume" chain store is a bike store in the summer, but is a SKI store come November. So, any bikes left in October are sold for something like wholesale prices.

And, if a 2005 model bike happens to be sitting around in January 2006, most bike stores will take "any reasonable offer" to get rid of it.

But, of course, if you see the bike of your dreams in June, and you are hoping it will still be at the store the first week of September, in YOUR size, and in your favorite color...well, good luck with that.
