Slime Tubes Tip
 

Got a tip for anyone running Slime tubes. I've got them in my Sedona,and hated having to bleed some air out to keep from getting green junk in my air gauge or pump. My Dad just picked up a Giant Cypress,which also has them,and gave me a tip from his tractor experience: if you rotate the wheel so that the valve is at the top(12 o'clock position),the goo stays at the bottom and you don't get any coming out the valve. No more mess.

Well, maybe. But I can see possibilities where you have goo in the stem which, when put at 12:00 o'clock, leaves it in the stem. I set mine at 4 or 8 o'clock (when I used the stuff), which would let anything trapped in the stem drain down - yet the valve was far enough away from where there slime would settle. Never had any problems.

I was thinking 4 or 8. you spin the wheel around too quick and the goo will still be in the stem.

4 or 8. Yep.

But the point of 4 or 8 is that if goo is in the stem, it can drain out. It seems possible for me for goo to be in there no matter where you put it. I don't know how much volume it takes up, but here is one example:

Suppose when the goo is all at the bottom, it has enough volume to completely fill that part of the tube (that is, contacting the inner part of the tube as well as the outer part at the bottom). Then you rotate the tire - the part that was touching the inner part of the tube begins to drain off, but possibly it drains into the stem first. You then stop the wheel when the step is at 12 o'clock. How can the goo get out of the stem?

Even if there isn't enough goo to contact the inner part normally, when you stop riding, does all the slime roll down the outer part of the tube to the bottom - or may some small amount sometimes drip down from the top area, falling on the inner section of the tube? If that happens, it then drains down that section until it reaches bottom, but at any point it may hit the stem first.

I don't actually know if any of this is probably, but it seems it is at least possible, so you need a way for it to drain out if it does happen.

I've got a tip: DON'T USE SLIME TUBES! Mine gummed up my valve no matter what I did.

I've heard people have that problem, but I used them for a couple thousand miles and never had it happen - though I always waited about 30 seconds after positioning the tire at 4 or 8 o'clock before doing anything with them.
