Here we go again! I got bored so I decided to start up this thread...We had the best 100 reasons to bike during the winter so I'll say what are the best/worst reasons to bike during the summer.

I live in Arkansas. One of the most common things you'll hear is "if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes, it will change". Temps range here from zero in winter to triple digits in summer. I'm in the NW part of the state in the Ozarks, terrain ranges from rolling hills to places where the elevation changes 600-800 feet in a half mile. The best thing about riding in summer....RIDING!

Another vote goes to humidity. Heat isn't so bad, it's the muggy, oppresive feeling that comes with high humidity that makes riding hell during the summer. Feels like the entire city is a giant steam bath.

Anything below 35 degrees celcius i like. Anything above that i don't like at all. The sun can really get to you.

Good:

Beautiful women + sports bras and those tiny jogging shorts. And sometimes they actually talk to me because they can't tell I'm 15 when I wear all my riding gear. Score one for the HS kid.

Summer soccer with my friend and his brother. Indoor games at USD.

Riding of course!

Bad:

Sunburns, owie.

Thats about it for bad.

Word. I'm all for space age performance fibers, too, but you know what? They barely work here in the South! You're gonna be doused whether it's a cotton t-shirt or a lycra jersey. Since I got this new helmet, it somehow channels the sweat of my head and down my face right into my mouth, which, in a weird way, is almost like some sort of weird sportsdrink. The weirdest thing is, I meet people who refuse to run or cycle in the winter because of the cold! Of course, I read all these posts by guys in the freakin' Yukon who ride a rusty fixed gear all year, but the winter here is extremely tame. I hate the heat here, and it's about to be worse. That's why in summer I whip out the head- and tail-lights and do a lot of night riding.

good - I'd rather bike in the summer than walk or wait for the bus, pleasure rides can be done in the AM, loads of women with primo behinds on the paths

bad - I sweat

I forgo to list the best reasons-lots of people with minimal amounts of clothing walking around! Of course, that can make you run into a sewer grate real quick...

Best: The snowbirds have gone home and the roads are a lot safer.

Best reason to ride in the summer - riding by the lake.

I can't think of a worst reason (BTW - I had a nice crosstown ride yesterday it was definitely in the upper ranges of heat/humidity in TO). I don't mind the weather, as long as I keep taking the cold drinks and water.
