Not a real cyclist?
Wlile reading through these posts I see a lot of thought that the "Comfort Bikes" are not for 'Real Cyclist", well, read on and tell me what you think.
Sunday morning (today), about 6:45, temperature in mid 50s and I'm riding the Virginia Creeper Trail on my (hang head in shame ) Diamondback Wildwood comfort bike, the sun is breaking through the clouds, the river is running alongside the trail and the fields you ride through have cows grazing contentedly and the trees are jumping with color.
Now I have made some upgrades (don't we all? ) tires, grips, pedals, seat, added a rack and a bag, now I'm pedaling along loving life, rode almost 20 miles in less than 2 hours, how can this get any better?
Now if that don't make me a real cyclist, I'll kiss your bottom bracket! Thoughts?
Oh yeah, I just bought an Electra Townie for the wife to join me also, but that's another whole lower level, right?

A man visited a hooker. She looked at him and asked: "Who do you think that you're going to satisfy with that little thing?" Answer: "Me."

If you ride a bike, you are a real cyclist. Shame that some mental midgets have yet to figure that out.

No matter what some snobs think about themselves, there's always someone just around the corner, ready to humble them.

. . .and what constitutes a comfort bike is a matter of definition. My Specialized Sequoia is classed by the manufacturer as a "comfort bike," yet it's very similar to the Roubaix model, which is a highly popular bike among hot roadies, except for an upwardly-angled stem and some extra braze-ons. If you're moving under your own power, you're a "real" cyclist.

The real cyclists are the ones who will nod or wave at me as I ride by them, no matter what bike I'm riding or what clothes I'm wearing.

There have been times when I was wrong about what sort of bicycle and equipment would be best for me, so how could I possibly make that judgement for someone else? "Comfort bikes" are the red-headed stepchildren of cycling, but they are more versatile and practical than racing-oriented MTBs and road bikes for commuters and such.I feel sorry for the guy in full CSC team kit with the 20c tires on his way to work, not the guy with the 3 speed hub on the same commute.

What's a real cyclist? Is there such thing as a real drivers too?
Race cars drivers aren't real drivers I suppose, as they only drive in circles.

I've got a FS MTB, and springer-equipped cruiser with springs on the seat too. I'd class them as comfort bikes.

I wear jeans and a cotton T-shirt whilst riding a bottom of the range hardtail. I feel pretty comfy whilst doing this and consider myself a real cyclist.
Don't be ashamed of your bike until it gets splashed across the tabloids, selling it's frame for WD40.

I think of a "cyclist" as someone who enjoys the time on the bike. Be they commuter, MTB, roadie, whatever. A "real" cyclist, to me, is someone who also takes the time to care for their ride. And I don't mean the OCP, weight-weeny nutters. Just someone who realises that their bikes give them pleasure, and they keep them in the best condition to do so.
