Did I get ripped off?
I just won this bike off ebay. It's a trek 1000. In the auction it said:"This late 90's early 00's has all orginal components." After I talked to a friend he highly doubted that it was late 90's. He estimated that it was late 80's early 90's. Is he right? Did I get ripped off? Was it a good or bad deal?

looks more like late 80's, early 90's. I'd ask for the serial number and contact trek directly.
This kinda caught my attention aswell
I see only minor nicks and no rust is present. - i'd be interested in seeing rust on an aluminium frame.

I agree with your friend. Trek hasn't put downtube shifters on a bike for a looooong time. I think they went to STI at about '95-ish. SIS? That's gotta make it old, maybe even late 80s!

It does look to me (no real experience with Trek bikes) like an older design. Other things that would makes me suspicious:
* "The gears are made by Shimano Light Weight"
Sure they're made by Shimano, but the wording makes it sound like someone is just reading off the tags on the part verbatim withou understanding.
* "The paint is excellent. I see only minor nicks and no rust is present."
Aluminum frames don't rust, and the paint job says it's Aluminum right in plain sight.
A Google Image search for "Bicycle Trek 1000" returns this as the first hit:

That thumbnail looks exactly like the one on eBay, and the ad claims it is a 1992 model, which seems far more believable...
But for the winning price of $230 I'd guess it's sill a pretty good bike for the price, just not what you expected.

The downtube shifters clearly give it away. It's not a bad bike for $230, but the $50 shipping kind of sucks a lot.

How does it ride? It seems a bit high for an aluminum framed, big frame Trek to me, but I don't really look for aluminum bikes and sell them rarely. You can get the age of the components off the date codes, age of the bike perhaps from the serial number. Here:

I wouldn't have bought the bike because I would never buy any bike I couldn't test ride first. Until you see it up close and ride it, it's impossible to tell what hidden damage the bike has, like bent forks or a cracked head tube.
I hope the bike comes in good shape for you.
Second, I think the seller might be a scammer because he lists the bike as a full 10 years newer that it really is. Internet research told the seller what he had in 10 minutes.
With all the negative stuff out of the way, never think another second about the price of the bike. It's water under the bridge now. All you have to do is to ride it and you'll come out really well, cash wise. If you don't ride it, well you pissed away whatever you paid for it. $23, $230, $2300-- doesn't matter what you paid into the bike if you ride the thing for a couple of thousand miles. That's money well spent.

Early 90's I had an 89 trek 1100 a few months back, and it's design was EXTREMELY similar to this bike, so I would say very early 90s.
Also note the lack of a seatpost collar...instead the frame has a section for a seapost bolt....that is something that is very rare on late 90s+ bikes.
As for those matrix wheels...if you are in the area and want a extra rear wheel (needs some work but it's matrix and it's for free) just PM me....it's not worth shipping it out though, as it's not in the best shape...it would make a nice "backup" wheel though. It needs some truing work, that's about it.
By the way to ship a pair of wheels, USPS wanted $9 each for slowboat....that's $18 for a wheelset....$50 for a bike is not that bad at all.

Raw cost to ship a bike... just actual shipping fees, is basically $40 ground. $10 labor for packing isn't bad, and $50 wouldn't even be unreasonable as a flat shipping charge. Thats about what most bike shops will charge to box and send.
