Looking for info about Central Florida

A long time friend is talking to me about a job offer in Ocala. So, before I get ahead of myself, can you give me a little feedback as to the lifestyle, culture, etc. within 50 miles of Ocala and the fun to be had within, say, 300 miles? Any and all kinds of fun, but if you have personal knowledge of road cycling, I'd appreciate info on that too. Are there mtb/dirt trails there?

Thanks!

I don't know the cycling scene in Ocala....but I have been there.

It kinda looks like a city, but its really more rural....even a little rednecky if you ask me. There probably isn't much to do in Ocala itself (unless you're into hunting, fishing and that sort of thing).

I don't know the distances....but your closest bets may be like Gainsville, Melbourne, Daytona, Orlando and St. Augustine. I'm in the Tampa area....Ocala is about 2 hours north of me.....judging by that and looking at a map...I'd guess those other spots to be about 1 to 1 1/2 hours away (depends on which one).

As for Florida.....it gets VERY HOT and VERY HUMID......it's really very hard to ride in the summer in my opinion...unless you really plan to do early morning rides or late afternoon/evening rides. Although....fall and winter a perfect. Winters don't often get that cold....so no problem to ride in the winter months.

Any more specific questions you can think of....just ask and I will try to answer (or some other FL members).

Ocala is a lot like Lexington, Kentucky: a small city in the middle of thoroughbred horse country. It is a fairly rural environment and not at all like South Florida. There seems to be a cultural dividing line that goes east and west through Orlando. Ocala is on the good side.

The area around Ocala is not flat, like much of Florida, but it is hot and humid. If you can arrange to make the move during the winter it will make the transition to the heat much easier to take. If you come from Colorado to Ocala this time of the year, the heat will just take your breath away. Bring lots of CoolMax.

The area around Ocala has some of the best riding in Florida. Daytona Beach is about 75 miles away and Tampa is about 85.

One big thing to remember if you do choose to move to Florida: We don't care how you do it back home.

Aw, the heat and humidity just keep the riff-raff out and leave the place for the rest of us trash.
