what size frame

hi all i have just bought my self my first road bike ,a mach 600 cp.i have come from ten years on a mountain bike.i am about 5,6 inside leg 29and 1/2 inside leg .the bloke in the shop said 49 cm is the right size frame ,so i bought the bike on is say so ,400 .to me now i have had a ride on the bike it seems a little to small,
do you think this is the right frame size or was he after a quick sail .
all info would be great thankyou .......scooter
