Magpie season in Australia

Yes folks, it's that time again. Those black and white, testosterone infused birds are at it again. As if I needed another reason to wear my helmet!

Thanks for the reminder.

The maggies don't appear here for a little while but I'm sure it won't be long before I'm looking for those swooping shadows.

Those bloody birds are our state emblem, I think they are a protected species, I don't know why. Last year I got swooped a bunch of times.

Maybe it's time I bought a gun to finally get revenge on these scary buggers.

"SWOOPING"
During breeding season Magpies (especially males) feircly defend their nest and territories by basically dive bombing any percieved threat whether in the air or on the ground including humans, sometimes resulting in a jab to the back of the head, or at the very least a huge fright. They prefer to wait untill the quarry is not looking, so often the first you know of it is when wings are beating beside your ears.

CHEERS.

aaah, interval training at its best, sounds like it's better than sprints with Eddie because you don't know when and where they're going to attack!

I actually don't mind magpie season. I think for a few months they just add a little bit of interest that other parts of the year don't have. Mind you, when they chase me for several kilometres (like that bastard at Uki a couple of years ago), I start to think differently.

I had a Magpie swoop me twice then fly up onto a powerline, he just sat there and when I was about 200 metres away he took off and started flying straight at me. I was looking over my shoulder and he kept getting closer, I didn't know what to do so I kept riding and waved one hand up behind my head. He came very close because I could here his wings before he retreated.

Did I mention I hate these buggers!

CHEERS.

Oddly I've never been attacked by a UK magpie - any idea if they are the same species? Or am I just lucky?

Yeah, the Uki magpie chased me for about 5km, then tried to grab onto the shoulder of my jersey with his beak. In the end I had to swing my arms around to get rid of him.

If it's any consolation, a study in Brisbane a few years back suggested that the male magpies only do it in an effort to impress others.
