Performance's product line narrows...

Seems that Performance tried to pull a Walmart on Giant, so Giant said Seeya.

They will not be carrying Giant or Jamis any longer, expect to see more Shwinns to go along with their house brand and Fuji.

Seems they have been through most of the major manufacturers. Speculation: Felt coming to Performance soon? Fairly new company, and Performance can't survive on Shwinn.

Granted, I've never seen any in store at Performance, but in the online store you can still get '03 Basso framesets, so there's that...

I doubt it, since...why after working to build a customer relationship, to just dump them for another company?

Either performance is asking for too much (like most corporate customers do) and is being unrealistic about it, or they are moving to either the low-end or house brand market.

My guess is house brands. After all, the only way they will ever get something cheapest is to build it themselves....but we all know very few companies have teh cajones (and business sense) to make it themselves, so they will just get a bulk-builder to make some for them to slap their label on, like their Scatantte brand.

I'm not speculating on the Giant/Jamis thing...I was only speculating on the Felt thing. Apparently Performance has had the same type of situation with several brands. They build a relationship, then blow it. In this case the corporation demanded that Giant to lower their prices so that they could increase their profit margins, and Giant responded that they only way they could do that is to decrease quailty, and Giant refused.

Perfromance already 'makes' their own house brand bikes, and have done so for some time.

Giant is one of those makers...BUT, their name-branded line is not to be considered as the same thing.

Difference is, to get pricing like that, they have to get their own made, and Giant won't do it unless the demand is high enough to justify the expense of setting up lines for it. Most builders think like this.

I work in manufacturing, so I'm pretty well experienced in how much of a pain in the rump setting up any line is...it's not just slap the tooling on the floor, crack the whip on the worker's backs, and you got bikes.

In March or so when I was buying my bike they still stocked Jamis. Not sure when they quit but it wasn't long after. I bought a Giant though (shoulda gotten the Jamis), but sounds like they really won't have much. The guys there pushed Jamis the most, then Giant, sounds like they're losing their favorite brands.

Makes me wonder what the longevity of the chain will be...

According to this thread:

Giant along with Jamis was removed by performance. Performance is trying to open a ton of new stores and they overlap territories with existing dealers so Giant would not open all of them, because of this Performance is becoming Pacific only, Mongoose, Schwinn, GT.
Specialized made the decision to pull out of supergo because to many of their IBD's were upset about them being there. I got the word from Specialized direct, so I'm positive it is true. It will probably be reported to the public on Monday.
Take that for what it's worth.

I don't know about the bikes they carry, but the Performance near me is absolute chaos. Nothing is shelved, stuff on the floor and around the counter getting kicked, accessories everywhere with no organizational thought.....I get a headache just walking in, so I don't anymore. I'l just hit one of the 3 or 4 LBS's within 10 miles of me.

I love my Performance. Bikes way below MSRP, and lots of them to test ride all day. Huge clearance rack. Some of the employees are a bit too surfer-dude ditzy, but very friendly.

Wonder if Performance is too gready, or if having financial problems. Last month, inventory in store was down.

Confirmed Giant no longer lists Performance as a Giant dealer. If performance keeps it up, they'll go the way of REI, and I'll have to find a new LBS. Bummer....

Which Performance do you go to?

I completely dislike the two near me -- CO Blvd & Greenwich. The staff quality has dropped to offensive levels... rude, ignorant, and most importantly, they don't really care.

Add Specialized to the list. Apparently Performance/Supergo is not happy with how Giant/Specialized are telling them how to sell their bikes. I've noticed how Supergo always excludes Specialized items from their sales... well because they're supposedly not allowed to until Specialized tells them it's ok.

I hope they start putting them on sale to clear their stock.

Greenwich village is looking for a new Store Manager.

Boulder. 2450 Arapahoe Ave., just off hiway, by PetsCo, or PetSmart, the Safeway shopping center.

Staff quality is not great, the store mgr and asst mgrs are very, very good. Still running better than REI.

Undecided about renewing performance membership with the dropping of Giant.

We got our Fujis at the Performance on Colorado Blvd. The staff is a mixed bag, but usually at least friendly.

I bought my Jamis at Performance just off of Arapahoe Rd and I-25 on Yosemite (sp). The guys there have been very good so far. They are always really backed up on work and you have to schedule 3 weeks in advance to get a tune up. Thats my only complaint.

Isn't a manufacturer telling the resellers what to sell it at illegal? I thought that fell under anti-trust?

Bought my Sedona and Absolute from the one in Rockville,MD. Brought my Dad by to get a Cypress. I've always gotten good service and some sweet deals with that Team Performance thing.

Hmm...maybe now they'll start stocking Konas!

I'm more familiar with how audio equipment sells, but often they, manufacturers, won't allow a product line to be sold by a brick and mortar store unless strict price guidelines are followed. If these are violated, they can cancel them as an outlet for their product. This is legal as far as I know.
