Selecting the right bike helmet.....

There appears to be 2 styles of bike helmets. Can someone tell me which one is better for biking. The black helmet style is an all-purpose style helmet. Recommended for biking, bmx, skateboarding, etc. The blue helmet is recommended for biking.

I like the styling of the black helmet. I don't really care for fancy designs or anything like that.

My question is would the black helmet style provide the same protection as the blue style one.

Or is there a helmet model for biking only but without all the fancy curves, etc.

And one more thing. I couldn't find anything on the net for this. But how do you know when a bike helmet is fitted properly. Someone told me that when wearing your helmet, you should have 2 fingers between the top of the helmet and your eyebrows. Not sure if that's true. Thanks.

The black one will end up cooking your head on any sort of long ride. Doesn't look very well ventilated at all, and there's very little way to get air flow up in there -- which is mainly why the fancy looking bike helmets are as wierd as they are. The black one will probably provide somewhat more protection however, it looks basically indestructible, and has that hard plastic shell over the foam. If you only plan on riding a few miles here and there on the weekends, it's a solid choice. Anything beyond that, and I'd definitely get a helmet specifically designed first and foremost for cycling (i.e. lots of vents!).

I think I found the helmet. Taking into account your advice I decided to look into the Bell Metro.

Good choice. Yesterday I bought the Bell Citi. It is a cheaper version of the Metro, but very similiar. I used it for the first time today, and I really like it. It was very comfortable, I forgot that I was even wearing it. Check it out, it is quite a bit cheaper than a Metro.

Thanks. I forgot to mention that it will be either the Metro or the Citi. I'm not sure what the big difference is except for the price. The Metro retails for $25 more. The only thing I see different is the air vent.

Correction....I think the Metro has a bunch of optional add-ons. Maybe that's what accounts for the price difference.

I plan on getting the Metro in Matte black to match my bike or the Citi yellow so people can see me coming.

What color did you get?

I have a Matte blue/silver bike, so I bought the silver. I considered the yellow also, but the LBS had a silver in stock, so I went with it. I'm looking into the add on flip mirror that can be added on to the Citi, as well as the Metro. I'm not sure if I'll get it or not.

The biggest difference in the two helmets seems to be the fitting system. The Metro has the "GPS Fit System", while the Citi is "ErgoDial "-new for 2005. It works real well. While the helmet is on your head, you turn a small wheel on the back of the helmet to tighten, or loosen the fit. You get the proper fit feel while wearing it. It makes it easy.

Don't forget that a black helmet will feel hotter in the sun. Just a consideration.

I recently bought the Louis Garneau Zen (or Rev...both got same rating). It/They were listed tops in the '04 rating of helmets. Tops for impact resistance, ventilation, etc...

I checked the site again. It looks like the ErgoDial does exactly the same thing as the GPS? There must be some kind of difference?
