Map out your route.

Here is a great site for mapping out your own route.
It uses java for that interactive feel.

there is soemone else who has created one using google maps that works wonderfully

I have been using GoogleEarth and it has been great. I have even found some routes that I did not know could be connected so I would not have to back track.
