Frazz today
 

Monday morning.

Frazz is so inside-cycling it's scary! He's always wearing at t-shirt under his work jumpsuit with the logo some product only BikeForums members would get. He's worn the logos of (off the top of my head) Crank Brothers, Cervelo, Richard Sachs, and many others. When they show him riding, it's usually a jersey of a peloton team. I swear last month he was wearing a QuickStep kit in a few strips.

I have a t-shirt from Hampsten Cycles that has a Jeff Mallett (the guy who draws Frazz) rendering of Andy Hampsten's lengendary Gavia crossing, only with the Seattle Space Needle in the background.

Cervelo has a t-shirt for sale on their site, too, with a Frazz strip on the back.

Thursday's Frazz is a good one. Frazz is fixing a kid's bike. Let's see if comics.com will let me hotlink. If the hotlink doesn't work, the comic is at

That looks like a good comic strip. I don't get the paper anymore but I think the (Washington) Post may carry it. Since the website only posts the current month's worth of strips, I'll have to find my way to a bookstore that carries it (barnes and noble has it for like $10.00).

I've only seen a few strips, but it strikes me that this is kind of influenced by Bill Watterson. Frazz could possibly be a grown up Calivn; except Calivin never really took part in social activities such as cycling. Caufield has many traits similar to Calivin that he's super bright for his age, rejects school, but ultimately enjoys learning. Hell, ms. plainwell could be an adult Susie Derkins.

. . . funny thing, I just cheked Wikipedia to find out more about the author, and the entry on Frazz mentions the similarities.
Anybody else see this?

Remember that Calvin's dad used to go on philosophical bike rides back in the old days. There's the bike connection. Add to that the fact that the drawing style is so similar to C&H that Frazz could be construed as a rip-off. Fortunately, Mallett's story lines and sly intellectual pro-cycling (and slightly anti-automobile) bent is refreshing in today's comics.

Sunday's strip had a whole yard full of political signs and there were some references there... Gerard Vroomen (Cervelo) and Julia Hampsten were some of the names. Today's strip references the ride across Death Valley. That's deep deep deep into cycling!

.....although Calvin HATED his own bike! The "bike vs. Calvin" strips were among the funniest of the series, and formed part of the tension between Calvin and his cycling enthusiast father. I also see the similarity between Frazz and Calvin and Hobbes in the drawing style and pacing, even down to the omitted borders in middle panels. Frazz is great.

I've thought that too. In addition to the similarities between characters and drawing style, Mallet occasionally does "experimental" Sunday panels, such as
this one.

Frazz is probably my favorite comic strip right now.

Today (Aug 17), Frazz is wearing the boar's head logo of Hampsten Cycles on his t-shirt.

I went to a borders near my house and found out that the first collection isn't going to come out for about another month or so.

Today, 8/24, Frazz is rockin' the Indy Fab logo under his janitor duds.... http://www.comics.com/comics/frazz/
