In another thread I asked for some advice on riding around St. Augustine, FL. I took my bike so here’s the report from my vacation. The roads were mostly in good shape with either nice wide bike lanes or roomy shoulders. No problem with cars (i.e. no honking, yelling or close calls). However, I did have to keep an eye out for the wandering tourist (like myself). I used A1A as my main route. I checked out some of the neighborhoods near Anastasia State Park (beautiful area) and the Alligator Farm. One day I went over the Lion’s Gate Bridge to the old Spanish section, the Castillo de San Marcos, and Fountain of Youth area. Cycling is definitely the best way to see the sights. Faster than walking, but slow enough to take it all in. I also rode south down to Flagler Beach on A1A. My wife left a bit later, in our vehicle, and met me at a State Park. It was perfect timing. I pulled up to the Park Ranger’s booth and she pulled in a few minutes later. At least I got there first. Nice area for bikes. I saw a good amount of roadies out there. It made me wish I brought my road bike instead of my hybrid. The only downside was the beach was undergoing restoration right in front of where we were staying. No beach access and loud earthmoving equipment running day and night.

Yeah, it was fun. It's a bit tough being back at work. I'm from Tampa so I'm use to the heat, as much as I can be. Lots of hydration and getting done before 11:00 a.m. is the key. Speaking of which...I went out at 5:30 p.m. last night for a short 12 mile ride and I thought I was going to die. I think it was still in the the 90's with a 100 + heat index.
