Rack for transporting bike(s)..... Need help choosing

Hello ~
I'm the one with a fairly new bicycle. Bought a Giant OCR3, and am LOVING IT!!!

I love it so much that I'm protective of it!

Right now when I take it out I'm hauling it in the back of my minivan. While it's working out "ok" I think I ought probably have a better mode, bc I can't do this when my family is with me.

I do not have a "hitch" on the back of my van, nor do I think I can afford both that + a rack right now.

Do I have any other alternatives? Thanks!

I'd suggest a roof rack but alas, they are spendy. If you go that route make sure to leave the garage door opener at home. Otherwise, your new bike rides inside or on the back as your expensive new bumper. Perhaps you could home-rig a fork mount in the cargo area. I've done this in an SUV with cheap success.

The "A" answer is always to find a way to carry your bike inside the car.

All of the elegant ways to transport your bike on the outside of the car can get a little pricy. How about sticking some folding chairs on the roof for the kids? The bike will stay clean and dry and you don't have to listen to the kids fighting with each other.

If you have a vehicle with a rack on top (as many minivans do), I think it's cheaper to build your own roof racks. I've just completed my second generation of home made roof racks. The first generation worked flawlessly but were made of wood and getting old. The new ones borrow from lessons I learned working with their predecessors. I'll post some pictures if there is sufficient interest. I am currently (self) limited to 3 on top and 4 on a hitch rack, but have my eye on a Saris 5-bike hitch rack and could probably get more on top.
