Buying a bike for a friend...

A good friend of mine is getting married soon. He's mentioned how he'd like to have a bike several times. At first I thought he was just going along with my enthusiasm, but several months later he's still talking about trying to save up the money.

I'm sure it's probably taboo to buy a gift just for the groom, but I figure he's getting the short end of the stick on a lot of the "registered gifts" that his wife-to-be has signed up for. Besides, she'll be getting a slimmer, healthier husband (if he uses it ).

Besides being a good friend, he's also the drummer of our band. We've been talking about getting a rack and hauling our bikes to gigs (when he gets his). No more waiting around for hours before playing, we'll be out riding around, taking in the local sites. *Some gigs are in rough neighborhoods and the bikes will have to stay at home.*

So the other day after practice, I asked him if he was seriously wanting a bike and he assured me he was still saving money (gas really is eating him alive, since he has to drive almost 50 miles to practice). So I sprang the news on him that I was going to get him a bike as a wedding gift and to head over to his LBS and start looking around. I told him early that it would have to be an introductory bike since I can't afford another $2000 hit in the bank account right now. Besides, now I'll have to get that bike rack.

So tomorrow afternoon, I'll be headed to the bike shop to buy yet another bike. When will this ever end?
