Cycling and what else ?
Just wondering what other recreational activities cyclists tend to be involved in and how does one relate to the other ? My other main pursuit is tennis, which meshes perfectly with cyling in terms of conditioning and reaction time. One definitely helps the other.

I show horses. Both riding and driving. We have a couple of saddle horses and quite a few miniatures. Cleaning the stalls and handling the hay helps with upper body conditioning which compliments the leg work on the bike. Also being able to quickly read and react to very subtle changes in body language of the horses has increased my level of awareness when on the bike. Perhaps this helps in dealing with traffic.

Golf. However, if I don't feel like doing something that causes me as much pain as Golf, then I just spend the same 4 hours pulling my leg hairs out one by one with rusty tweasers.

Fly Fishing
Downhill Skiing Harley-Davidson! Entertaining 3 kids under 12 years old! Volunteering time at Homeless Shelter (Lunches) What is Time? |
I have hockey and a healthy appreciation for beer, whisk(e)y, Scotch, and bourbon. Cycling helps with the hockey (aerobic conditioning), the hockey helps with the bike (can you say anaerobic intervals?), and both help keep the beer gut in check :D

swimming and water polo (occasionally, can't find/afford a team in NYC, so moslty swimming these days). both keep me in great shape over the winter. Still waiting for that "end-of-grad-school" salary increase to afford to get into cyclocross.
|
Slalom and barefoot H20 skiing in the spring through fall(operative word here is "fall") I ride to recuperate from hard falls and to get blood flow back to my brain which my wife says does not work when I tell her I need to get back into the water to retry that trick for the tenth time.

mountaineering / backpacking
scuba diving kayaking archery tennis golf (driving range) ...and many others |
I go hiking, tennis, squash, rock-climbing, dance salsa/tango, weekend sailing, golf, motorcyles, race cars, jump out of perfectly good airplanes. I want to pick up bull-fighting next as that's the last "real sport" I haven't done yet (according to papa Hemingway).

Boy, I sure don't fit in. :(
Other than cycling, it's racquetball, softball and frisbee (ex burnout here ;) ) I also run about 3 demo derbies a year, so I take perfectly good cars and destroy them. Is eBay a sport? If so, I'm really good at 'ebay'. |
Lacrosse in the spring

Used to fly airplanes but lost my medical. I do a lot of woodworking now.
|
I attempt to play golf sometimes. But in the winter it's model railroading. I usually ride rail/trails so I can look at some of the historic sites as it relates to "playing with trains".

Yoga: helps with balance, core strength, breathing, concentration, posture...all kinds of wonderful things.
Hiking: great lower body conditioner exercise...and time to see the flowers Skiing (course I have to admit, i miss living in the West, where the real mountains are!!!) great for quick reaction time, balance, lower body conditioning, aerobic exercise. dancing: showing off my legs from all the activities (including cycling) above...he he he... |
Hiking and backpacking--never enough of the latter to please me. Somehow mountain biking doesn't appeal. Sailing. X-country skiing. All involve aerobic conditioning and leg strength, neither of which I ever have enough of. And each can be done either competitively or non-competitively, in groups or by oneself. Aah.

Skydiving
Im an instructor, coach, videographer, and competition team member. This is the first year i didnt go to the drop zone on a friday night, skydive all weekend, and come home sunday night, all summer long. As a sport, it doent give me any exercise. Doesnt take much energy to fall. Does take massive flexibilty and body control. And a huge pshychological barrier to overcome. After that its flyign your body, which is probably the best feelign in the world. Biking hopefully will get me fit and healthy :) |
x country skiing hiking and started doing triathlons a couple of years ago
and geocaching, the bike is a good way to get to some of them, flying 2 string kites, plus famliy stuff the grandkids like to ride in the trailer, also full time student plus work part time so not alot of free time |
