Hey! You can see by my avatar that I lost weight on top of my head (ie. am happily bald).

But this is causing a problem!

Now I'm getting a suntan outline of diamonds from my Giro Atmos helmet! Its starting to look kinda obvious to the casual observer. I'm sure they must wonder how/why my head tans the way it does, haha!

Its all good!

Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

Have a great riding weekend!

I recomend sun screen
I think they infact make liners you can put in side your helmet that allow good air flow but prvent sunburns and the like. Not just limited to the folically challenged ither even us hairy folks can get sunbuned scalps.
I know a few people who get sunburned like that alot realy . Have a look at the color of the styrofoam in your helmet its white right? What does white do with sunrays? It reflect them in effect magnafing the effect (just like sun on snow n the winter hurts your eyes course it not only reflects the sun but also magnifies the effect.).

Yep...a guy I ride with who's a little folicly challenged rides with a bandanna/"do rag" underneath his helmet for specifically that reason.

Yeah, sunscreen. I have been known to forget it on top of my head on long rides and got those ridiculous little tans, though.

I wear a coolmax cap under my helmet. Keeps the sweat out of my eyes as well as keep my bald dome cooler.

You can alternate 2 different helmets with different patterns.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but has anyone had trouble with their Atmos finish peeling, specifically the stealth black? My bike shop warrantied out the first one I had that started peeling after about 6 months and now my second one is peeling. Neither helmet was subjected to solvents or treated roughly.

Just curious.

I bought the red/white/blue one on sale at Performance a few weeks ago so don't have enough usage on it to notice any problems yet. I hope it holds together!

2 years ago, I had my head shaved for the 2 day MS150. After two days in intense sun, I had some interesting tan lines on my head.
I ride mostly on non-peak sun tanning times, but if I'm out during midday sun, I'll throw a coolmax cap on the dome.
Careful with the sunscreen, use only the ones that won't turn your eyes into lava if the sunscreen and sweat drip into your eyes.

A while back someone posted that after a long ride in the sun, the sunburned pattern on his head from his helmet made him look like Darth Mal from Star Wars!

Well I shave my head and had some cool diamonds burned in earlier this summer. I think it looks pretty cool - like a Maori tribal tattoo.

BTW - if you're bald on top, why not shave it all off? The halo look makes guys look like a grandpa.

I wear standard cotton cycling caps underneath my helmet. The brim is useful to keep sun out of my eyes, and the cap keeps most sweat from running down into them.

You are correct!

My grandpa, uncle, 1st cousin and dad all had/have the same hairline that I do. Actually I'm quite proud of that. I only wish the 'halo' was all white.
