First ride in a long time...

Well, I finally got my bike. It's a beautiful Colnago (shameless bragging), and I absolutely love it. I picked it up from the LBS yesterday, but by the time I got home, it was too dark to ride.

Today, after work I went for a little spin around the neighborhood. This was my first time on a bike in about 7 years (for my story, see my introduction here:Hello from flat Florida).

I felt strong prior to getting back on the bike, but I was in for a real shocker. I didn't go very far, or very fast, but my averave speed was around 16 MPH, with a peak of 30 MPH in an impromptu sprint. As far as I'm concerned, that aint too shabby for a guy who hasn't ridden once in the last 7 years, and just went through cancer, including chemo and radiation.

To top it all off, my max HR tonight was 195, and I wasn't even pushing it. The old 220 minus age figure had me maxed out at 191, so I guess I'm testament as to how wrong that figure can be.

The only thing I really sucked at tonight was my bike handling. I was all over the place, so I'll need to work on that. Otherwise, I totally surprised myself, and I'm totally psyched to get back into racing. Now if I could just find the time to train...

    Well done moo2.

It's a nice feeling, eh? I had my own share of health woes 2 yrs ago when I was admitted to hospital for i.v insulin. I thought I was dieting 'too' well, weight crashed from 90Kg to 68Kg in the blink of an eye. Recovery was painful, I was utterly emaciated, but once I got back on the road bike I was in a different place. My fastest sprint, downhill assisted to start, was 45mph, I was sh1t scared but what a rush that was. I've since sold up and moved onto mountain bikes.

I suppose now you will be going down the corridor and turning left into the road cycling forum. I believe they have a coffee machine in there, smart books, comfortable chairs and sofas, and digital tv.

When you are ready to switch to mountain bikes, come and join us in the mountain bike forum. You'll find us at the other end, turn right, 2nd left, watch out for the packing crates and the dumpster. Out of the door, up the hill, mind those cow patties, and you'll see some rocks and a descent leading down a borken trail to a lake surrounded by rich pastures and more cow patties. See you there sometime?

Keep up the good work, but I wouldn't pay too much attention to the 220 minus age rule, I blow it off all the time.
