Had a really miserable expierence with Nashbar last night. I tried to buy Illuminite Seam Sealed Jacket from them. Just to be sure that they ship to Europe, I called their customer service to ask. They said that they would ship to Europe, no problems. So I ordered that damn jacket, and a couple of hours later received an email with "Sorry, we can't ship to Latvia". I called the customer service again, and that nice lady was just dumb. First, she said that Latvia is not a country. (She asked if Latvia is within United Kingdom). Then she said that Latvia is not in Europe. At that time I lost my hope of ever getting that jacket. There was no point in explaining that DHL, FedEx, UPS, USPS all can ship to here without any problems. I'm angry!!!

How comes that Performance can ship to Latvia, Supergo can ship to Latvia, damn near everyone can ship to Latvia, but Nashbar, which was bought by Performace by the way, can't?

- perhaps because of this report from the US Dept. of State?

- apparently, some countries are on an Internet Fraud Complaint Center list.

- perhaps another vendor may have the jacket (or similar product) you're looking for?

(and personally, i think there's just as much if not more Internet fraud committed in the U.S.; anyway, it'd be an interesting topic for a short article, so thanks for posting your question)

Let me quote a few words from the report you linked to.

Quote:
Since opening May 8, 2000, the IFCC has received complaints on subjects of Internet auction fraud from 31 different countries. As with the victims, the US absorbs the most subjects at 91%. Subjects residing in Romania (4%) and Canada (2%) follow the US. Other countries where subjects of Internet auction fraud live include Belarus, Indonesia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan.
So, they should stop shipping to the US and Canada as well?

maybe being in Latvia you are grouped together with Russia as there is a LOT of fraud emanating from Russia. I can personally confirm this after my credit card was apparently used in Moscow and I have never been there.

According to Performance web site: International orders will be processed and shipped once billing address verification has been obtained. The package must be shipped to the billing address, this verification must be verbally received from the card holder's bank.

That applies to all international orders, not just orders to Latvia. To me it seems pretty safe procedure, so obviously security was not the reason for their unability to ship.

There are several European mail order places that will ship to Latvia. I just placed an order with http://www.bike-components.de/. They charge 20 euro shipping, the same as to Finland and other EU countries, so for once we're not getting shafted.

Do you have a credit card or did you try to pay with your Hansa Banka, Unibanka or whatever card? Latvian bank cards don't work for online purchases. At http://www.bike-components.de you can wire money to their account, so you don't need a credit card.

BTW, where are you in Latvia?

I am from Riga. I used my Visa [Classic] credit card issued by Hansabanka, I have successfully used it before at both US and European internet shops. Nowadays there is no shortage of online shops that would ship to Latvia (Supergo and Performace from the USA, www.hibike.de from Germany and www.chainreactioncycles.com from the United Kingdom, to name a few). The problem is that other shops do not carry that particular jacket I was looking for.

Veloserviss on Brivibas (don't really like the shop, but hey) had something similar last year. Perhaps they still have it. It was from a Dutch company and cost around Ls 45.

I've also heard (but I haven't been there) that there is a Fox shop that has opened in the basement of Bowlero. Perhaps they have the Storm jacket or another cycling jacket.

blackDoggy- FYI I just bought a Fox Stormblock jacket from the store in Bowlero. It has 3M refelctive stripping and surprisingly good ventlation. I was surprised that they had biking specific jackets. It's worth checking out what they have.
