Does anyone have any information on http://www.mobybicycle.com/index.htm ? They have listings on Ebay for '05 closeouts which seem almost too good to be true. I'm looking at getting a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR or Santa Cruz Blur XC and don't want to be out $2000. Anyone know if that shop is legit? Also, I know this may almost seem like an ad, but I'm in no way affiliated with them. I just don't want to be ripped off.
I found this mobybicycles.com place through a listing on Ebay. They had tons of '05 closeouts at TGTBT prices. After I contacted them, they sent me to their website. Their listings are now gone. But there are now numerous other similar listings w/'05 closeouts, but with different user ID's. I believe these are fraudulant listings. Beware.
I've had a look at their listings, and also chased up the domain name registration of mobybicycles.com.
Looks extremely bogus - the website appears to have been thrown together overnight, and the domain name registration is relatively new. If you read the 'customer testimonials', you'll find that they are all written in the same manner, grammar, etc, which again looks like one person sat down and typed up the testimonials.
And besides, on eBay they claim that their 3rd party escrow payment service is much more secure than PayPal. I know PayPal isn't perfect, but it offers punters like us a decent level of protection in case any transaction goes sour.
I also tried to track down Moby after seeing the ebay listing. I sent them an email and got back a friendly reply, and was urged the HURRY and buy. I questioned why British spellings were used "colours" and "favourite" and was told they take orders in Canada, not MT. (very suspcious).
And despite claim on their website (when it was still up) that they had been in biz in Helena, MT for 33 years, the chamber of commerce there had never heard of them.
Obviously. the bikes and prices were TGTBT. I hope no one lost $. I sent ebay security a message suggesting they take a look.
I also saw the Ebay listing. Those prices are too good to be true. But I did register with the escrow company they noted and I have exchanged a couple of emails. I'll buy the bike If they turn out to be legit. Only gave my address and name. No financial info.
I couldn't find them on the business listing for Helena either. Map quest did indicate the address but that doesn't mean anything.
I think I will attempt to locate a business near their address and ask them if the bike shop exists.
