It's not the reason I started bike commuting, but it happens to dovetail perfectly at this point. Other news outlets picked up this story also. Maybe bike prices will go up automatically as a result of this article? If so, blame the oil companies.

Unfortunately the companies that will show the biggest profit in the bike biz are the one's that supply crappy X-mart bikes. Real LBS's won't see the huge spike in profits as most Americans still view bikes as "toys"

When I moved into my new house in 1999, the gas station near my house was $1.199/gallon. Now it's currently at $3.139/gallon. I guess I'll keep commuting by bike as long as the median gas prices are over $3/gallon.
