Who sells complete replacement wheels for decent prices?

First post here. I'm a street biker, not an enthusiast.

Anyway, need to replace the rear wheel (which got stolen) on my 1999 Specialized Hardrock. What would be a good online store to get one? I'm not interested in putting it together, just need a standard, inexpensive complete rear wheel (rim, spokes, hub, gears) so I can use my bike again. The only preference I would want is a quick release hub, although this time I intend to lock the rear wheel as well. Thanx.

Is there in your town a place that only repairs bikes? Or that sell second-hand bikes? Or that recycles bikes?

In Montréal, I have bought four second-hand wheels which either came from bikes where the frame was too small, or broken, or accidented... and I feel the price was right.

You can also check out Ebay. There are some good deals there.

For my commuter bike I went to a good local bike shop with an experienced wheelbuilder. He built up a commuting grade wheel, with Shimano Alivio hubs (about $12), DT spokes and Mavic touring rim.

Some people may be a bit sniffy about handbuilding low-grade components, but they are excellent value, work well for years and with handbuilding, the wheel will be a lot stronger and more reliable than a machine built one.

My trusted mechanic at my favorite Bike shop special orders "Velocity Wheels." This is for my older road bike, which has so many miles on it, I have replaced wheels like on four seperate ocassions. I have had good luck with Velocities. last well over 15,ooo miles and are reasonably priced..

Don't forget to buy a good kryptonite lock. I bought a complete set of deore lx with good mavic rims for $110. I thought that was more than reasonable. A bike lock worth buying will cost $75 - $110. Or commuting on a beater is always an option. Thanks to walmart bike theft is almost nonexistant in our area. Can't even give them away at garage sales anymore.
