Canadian Bikers and Nashbar

I'd like to put a question out to any Canadians here who have bought from Nashbar. I'd like to know what other charges were applied to your order. I would assume that it would only be the tax but I just want to make sure. Also how long did it take to recive your order? Thanks

You pay the price in US dollars + shipping to Canada in US dollars to them on urr CC or by check or money order. Then when it arrives in Canada, whoever is shipping it will either leave a slip at the shipping adress or deliver it to you. When you are receiving it no matter where it is you will pay GST and PST/QST/HST on the item + duty (call customs for the % on what your ordering) and possibly brokerage fees that customs may charge you as well.

By the way, 15% is on the Canadian dollar value of your items. at the exchange rate on the day you go pick up your items.

I have never been charged duty on any item I've ordered from Nashbar. You pay PST and GST [applied to total cost of the order, including shipping] and a $5 customs handling charge.

I've found that you have to get a really good price on any item from the US to make it worthwhile ordering from there, or an item that's impossible to get here.

With the exchange rate and shipping, you can almost double the cost in US dollars. Shipping is sometimes exorbitant. (Not necessarily Nashbar, but it's something you really have to check.)

Buying from Nashbar, Performance. etc. won't save you money, but it won't usually cost much more than if you'd bought the same items at a shop in Canada. The advantage isn't price, but selection. You can get a whole lot of stuff from Nashbar that you either can't get here or have to have special-ordered.

I have bought bib shorts from Velowear/Voler in the States. The reason is that the only bib shorts my LBS carries are C$150 Castellis and Pearl Izumis. I find that, even after the exchange and tax, the Volers are both affordable and good quality... And since I know the fit, I don't have to go out and try on a bunch of different shorts.

[The other thing is that, for some reason, the stuff I buy from Voler seems to get past the customs guys, so I haven't actually paid any tax on it...]
