clipless for exercise bike

I am trying clipless but I wanted to leave my platforms on my bike for winter (more snow more foot down for now etc) but I want to enjoy and get used to my clipless so I thought put them on the stationary. I just had hip surgery in June and I have mild CP so because of my hip I ussually lay my bike down to get on it. I WILL DO A CENTURY but the most I've done at a time is 56 miles. I was told by guy at performance standard pedals are 9/16 and exercise are 1/2". The exercise bikee cost $120 a few months ago so I dont want to go spend 110$ on a trainer right now....do they make 1/2" SPD clipless pedals? Performace guy said maybe but expensive. I still am paying for my new hip. I'm only 32 and so I can't spend with abandon. Is there a 1/2 " to 9/16 adapter?

Please help if possible
thanks either way,
