"We went by bicycle, no automobile being available because of wartime restrictions on their use. On the way home, my condition began to assume threatening forms. Everything in my field of vision wavered and was distorted as if seen in a curved mirror. I also had the sensation of being unable to move from the spot. Nevertheless, my assistant later told me that we had traveled very rapidly."

4/19/43 Albert Hofmann, Sandoz pharmaceutical. First acid trip.

Won't find that in your average book of bicycle quotes.

-----------

I've done this twice, one more to go---

The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realization that this is what the child will always need can hit hard. ~Sloan Wilson

"He neither drank, smoked, nor rode a bicycle. Living frugally, saving his money, he died early, surrounded by greedy relatives. It was a great lesson to me."
John Barrymore quotes

"I'll tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood."

- Susan B. Anthony 1896

One for the fixies:
"I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft... As for me, give me a fixed gear!"
Henri Desgrange (founded the Tour de France,)

But 17 years ago, I arrived at CNN with a suitcase, with my bicycle, and with about 100 dollars.
Christiane Amanpour

One of the most important days of my life was when I learned to ride a bicycle.

No idea where it came from, but the cliche "It's like riding a bicycle, you never forget" is so, so true.

Me (drunk at pub being asked about cycling): Winning a bike race is better than sex.

Female acquaintence: You must not be very good at sex then.

Me: You mustn't have ever won a bike race.

G'day Babaluey.
Unfortunately, no. It was a theme on the BikeWest stickers (pic attached) here in Western Australia a little while ago.

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours
of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills
and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a
motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have
no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven
through as you gain by riding a bicycle.

Reminds me of a similar line told to me as a joke about my profession (software engineer).

Software Engineer is at bar chatting up this beautiful woman for an entire hour. He's talk all about code and software and how complex it is and trying to look super smart to impress the girl. He tells her about the different languages and timing problems and overall how smart one has to be in order to debug problems with the code.

Through all of this, the beautiful blonde lady was smiling and listening intently and the guy thought he was "in like Flynn". Then she looks him square in the eye in utter seriousness and says "if the bugs are that hard to find and eliminate, then why do you put them in the code in the first place?".

a ride in a car degrades the country side to nothing more than a distance between point A and B

Someone said "Pain is weakness leaving the body."
I just shorten it to "Pain is weakness" and I want to get that lettered onto the top of my top tube so that when I'm out there suffering I'll look down and
see, Pain. Is. Weakness.

"I looked at that bike like it was from Mars, and though the top of my head barely came up to the tip of the saddle, I knew right then and there that this thing "fit" me."

OR THE BEST ONE EVER: by John Howard (used with permission)

“My infatuation with cycling, I now realize, goes much deeper than racing or even winning. The sport has substance. The legends, international flair, jargon, seasonal unions, and lasting friendships, the unseen strategies and the never-ending thrill of adventure - - These are the Diamonds of my youth.”

I collect quotes, two of my favorite bicycle quotes is by the legendary campunisimo Fausto Copi. After winning a race he was crowded by a group of reporters and one of them asked him "what is the secret to your great success" Fausto leaned into the microphone and replied "ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike!" and the second one is by Lance Armsrong "I now only have good days and great days."

My amendment of an existing very short poem (orig. source unknown):

Here lies the body of Edward Grey, who died, defending his right of way.
He was right, dead right, as he pedalled along, but he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong

I like Mr. Desgrange's quip about fixed gears, but my favorite is this one I stole from somebody forgotten:

"Ride it like you stole it!"
