Is the Saturday morning "Breakfast ride" a thing of the past?
 

Back in the 70's I was a member of a local touring club. One of our regular pastimes was the Saturday morning "breakfast ride": a weekly or twice-monthly event where we'd meet up at around 7am and ride somewhere within an hour's touring speed to a breakfast spot.

Do any touring clubs still do this?

[SARCASM]Of course, these days you'd have to carry into the restaurant your pump, water bottle, saddle-bag, and anything else some punk couldn't strip off your bike.[/SARCASM]

I remember those rides as being a lot of fun and they generally didn't eat up your day. :)

Good memories. I used to do that with my next door neighbor in northwest Indiana every week that there wasn't snow and ice on the roads. We'd usually get home by about 10:00 or so and still have the day ahead of us. We never worried about leaving our bikes outside because we always sat where we could see our bikes and besides, the guys who steal stuff like that don't get up that early on Saturday.

I guess that I'm a middle aged relic too but, the guys who I graduated high school with have all gotten old. It just goes to show: "You don't stop bicycling because you get old, you get old because you stopped bicycling."

I don't know of a club that does it, but I'd be game for one. Can't think of a better way to start the weekend.

I think one of the local clubs here does that but I tend to think of them as an old-fart club anyway. ;)

theres a cascade cycling club coffee ride once a week, a milk run of about 30 miles. Haven't participated. Many northwesterners eschew food for coffee, for some odd reason.

Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club in North Port, FL has a Pancake Bike ride once a month to a church in Port Charlotte. Great breakfast of pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee served by some of the church members for $3.50 plus you don't have to worry about anything being ripped off your bike. Come on down!!

I know some guys around here do that. I just can't get excited about stopping and eating a big meal and then jumping back on the bike for a long ride.

Sounds like a great idea ! Although at this time of the year it should be a Saturady morning "antifreeze ride".

We do one here in OKC. Daylight savings months it starts at a fixed location and standard time months it rotates to different starting points around the metro. It'll make for a great Christmas eve ride this Saturday. Burn off some of those extra holiday calories.

Man, I'd love to come this Saturday, but I'll be just getting on the road to go up to, Brrrr, Iowa. Would that be the pre-donut ride, or the donut ride on the Oklahoma Bicycle Society's webpage? Or would it be another one, because I'd love to go on a ride like that on a weekly basis.

Shore Cycle Club in SJ does a "Breakfast Ride" on the first Sunday of the month. It used to be ride, then go to the firehouse for pancakes, but I don't think the firehouse does that anymore.

I have occasionally trawled a few bleary-eyed riders out for a riverside or park view breakfast of a Saturday morning. The trouble is in finding other shameless early risers like myself.

As I've said before "A true cyclist hasn't a clue what is in their local area but can name the children of all of the staff at every coffee shop exactly ten miles from where they live."

What's the challange in that? Anybody can ride back to their car if they haven't overloaded on biscuits and gravy. We used to have one where we rode out into the country to an all you can eat fried chicken dinner at a church. Yummy. Somebody thoughtfully located a monster hill for us to climb about a mile after leaving the church.

The club I ride with still does that, and I personally on the ride I lead once a month do that also. Wolverine sports club here in SE michigan is the club I belong to, on saturday and sunday's there are rides that meet to ride at 9am and are home by noon with breakfast or snack, normally the place they go to has both options and people can choose. So I guess it just varies by place and tradition and the willingness of the group to do it or not.

Phoenix metro bike club does this every saturday morning. Rides include a long or short option. usually 25 to 40 miles with it ending at a spot for breakfast.

The Narragansett Bay Wheelmen have the "Cafe Ride" every Saturday. Leave Providence at 9AM, ride to Bristol for a breakfast of your choice, then return. A 26 mile round trip.

Tomorrow Dec 24 the temp is predicted to be in the low 40's. Very mild for those of us accustomed to this area.

Whenever my wife found out we were riding the "Breakfast route" she would obviously join in on the ride. However, my riding partner's wife would always insists on using the Tandem whenever the Breakfast route was discussed.

We would do this on occassion here in Southern California. One of our routes has several sidewalk cafe's with patio seating. We usually planned routes which would end with a stop at the breakfast restaurant. It was a nice way to cap off the morning. :)

It was a balmy 47 degrees today in the Quad Cities. I went for a ride today.

Does a Wednesday morning breakfast ride count. The Quad City Bicycle Club does a breakfast/coffee ride on Wednesdays during outdoor ridng season.

Fewer and fewer of our club rides are now breakfast rides. The last one I led, about a month ago, no one wanted to stop for breakfast. We stopped at a convenience store and got Gatorade and cookies. I wouldn't call that breakfast.

The guys I ride with on Saturday mornings stop for breakfast (or at least a coffee and muffin) at the end of our ride. The social aspect of the ride is as important as the riding and we had a special champagne breakfast ride on Christmas Eve.

The Bullshifters Saturday rides do as well although I've never attended the breakfast portion of the ride.

My club has had a Saturday morning breakfast ride that starts from the same location for as long as anybody can remember and that means mid-70s at least. The rides vary in length from low 30 miles up to 50 miles. The town we start at is central to many other small towns. Great ride.

Every Saturday. The "Taco Ride" as it is called because we stop at a local Mexican take out spot for breakfast tacos. We didn't think they were going to be open on Christmas eve, but luckily they decided to be open this year, and just closed early.
