Google maps, directions, AND elevation ... did you know?

Did you know that, the variation of Google maps that allows you to map routes now does elevations? Very cool. Check it out.

If you can show me that Google's mapping software will show Canada or Australia in minute detail, like Mappoint can, and will also show the elevations etc., like you describe ... then I might come around and admit that it is a decent mapping program. But currently, from what I can see ... it's one of the worst out there!!

    Here's mappoint:

    http://mappoint.msn.com/

Type in the name of a small Canadian city, like say ... Red Deer, Alberta. Zoom in just a little ways on the roads to the left of Red Deer and have a look around. You can see the names of all the Range Roads and Township roads, and you can see which roads connect with each other.

    Here's Google maps:

    http://maps.google.com/

Type in the name of a small Canadian city, like say ... Red Deer, Alberta. Zoom in on the roads to the left of Red Deer and have a look around. You can see that most of the road exist, but until you zoom right into an individual road, you can't what it is. And then you've zoomed in too far to see what it connects with. Very awkward to use!

Plus some of the towns are missing from the Google map. To the right of Red Deer, there is a town called Joffre (I worked there last summer). On the Google map, it doesn't exist. But it does exist (you can even search for it specifically by name) on Mappoint.

Some day you will be able to do this and Google will actually be able to map the route onto ROADS (rather than simply as GPS points) and give you a turn-by-turn cue sheet with distances, elevations and climbs...and then it will be the best mapping program in the world.

But until then...it's merely a curiousity.

Duh! Thanks for posting the obvious.

As of Dec 16th, gmaps have added elevation. This was my point, and I'll apologize in advance that there is in fact one post on the subject.

You obviously haven't been to Red Deer recently then, have you?
