How Do You Secure Your Valuables?

[No, MERTON, not THOSE valuables. . .I've got them "handled" you might say.]

Talking about wallets, keys, etc. while riding.

I'm an old security guy and from early biking times have used a fanny-pack lashed to myself midships with the pack on the right hip, holster fashion. I like the ability to "feel" it and know it's still riding with me. Those times I couldn't manage this configuration, my ride was ruined by the constant fretting about the wallet in my seat pack.

Anyway, I'd like to take a few square inches off my airframe profile and lose the pack.

How do you folks handle the security of your wallet and keys whilst riding?

Seat bag.

Jersey pocket. Keys wallet and cell are not heavy and the only reason one needs a wallet is to have money, so you want it with you when you get off the bike anyway.

Panniers. I don't bring my wallet. Just a couple of $1 bills to upgrade my bus ticket, drivers license (for ID), credit card (safer to have stolen than a debit card), and keys.

Put inside a trunk bag which is bungied on rear rack. Plan later to upgrade to topeak bag and rack so don't have to mess with bungies. You could also use a saddle bag. You don't want in pockets or on back.

Jersey pocket or tucked away in a backpack compartment when commuting. I do find myself thinking about how easy it would be to have something fall out of my jersey pocket though, wondering if I would even notice it.

Jersey pocket, jacket pocket, handlebar bag, saddlebag, quit worrying so much.

I use a wedge seat bag with velcro attachmetns. Stays on tight but can be removed if I need to take things with me. I have tools, CO2 pump, tube, cash and an ID (I carry this instead of drivers liscense). Keep a house key and cell phone too. There is a separate compartment that holds the keys, id and money in my Cannondale brand bag.

*worries if chipcom finds panniers acceptable*

Will he beat me if I put my valuables in the wrong spot?

*looks over his shoulder nervously*

Small wristlet purse with my keys, credit card, bus pass, driver's license, cell phone, and cash. (purse goes into back jersey pocket).

Leave as much as possible at home.

goldener 01-10-06 12:39 PM

$5 and a few quarters in jeans pocket.

i use a specialized mini-wedgie, and about the only thing i put in there while im riding is my car keys. If i am wearing a camelback, i put them in there, and put my multi-tool in the wedgie.

CastIron 01-10-06 03:08 PM

Wallet on my person (jersey pocket or such) and keys in seat bag or pocket.

My ~"Valuables"~ get locked securely to something solid if I have to go into a store for a second. I try not to even be out of sight of them very long. :D

I just put my wallet, keys, etc. anywhere they fit. I do put my wallet and my cell phone in sandwich bags before putting them in my jersey pockets to keep them dry. I discovered I can use my cell phone without taking it out of the bag.

I'm worried about putting wallet, keys in to my jersey pockets, afraid that they might hop out when I'm pulling a powerbar or something out. I use either a Frame Bag , holds all my 'stuff' just fine, or one of their goodie stashers I'm even thinking about getting a second goodie stasher, mount one back by the seat for wallet and stuff, and a second up by the stem for snakes.

Before that, I used my seat wedge, but I've got a largish one, and could fit stuff ok.

I don't think things will fall out of a jersey pocket.

Unless you start doing cartwheels on the pavement, of course.

DieselDan 01-10-06 07:23 PM

Insurance card, cell phone, and car key or house key in my top tube box. I may have some cash in a jersery pocket.

For faster pased rides where I won't let my bike out of my site, all valuables squeeze into a mini wedge. For longer, more family oriented rides, where I potentially leave my (older) bikes out of site (for not too long of a period, I promise!), I keep my wallet in my jersey pocket or shorts pocket if I'm wearing mtn biking shorts.

chipcom 01-10-06 08:25 PM

I know it's not OCP, but the handlebar bag is my favorite place for my wallet, phone, keys, etc. It pops right off, has a shoulder strap, and is in full view and accessible while riding. I like having my 'stuff' with me, because when I ride there is no telling where I might decide to stop...especially if the GF is with me and we come upon a flea market, craft show, garage sale, or just about any shop that looks interesting...to her!

Good to know I'm not the only neurotic worrier in the world. Which is why I've always got the messenger bag with me. Also handy to carry pan dulce or anything else I stop off for.

For those leaving their house with just $5 in their pockets, do you leave the door unlocked?

This is what I keep all my stuff in, then this goes into one of my painners. It's from LittleEarth. Also I am a license plate collector so it fits well.

The only thing of value is the bike itself. I throw my body across it and dare anybody to try to pass my snap kick to the face.
