    Who makes steel bikes?

    I've been looking at the Mercier Serpens 853 and the Bianchi Vigorelli...any other suggestions?

    That's a pretty bike...the quest is $1400...I wonder what it would cost to upgrade to Ultegra.

    I hadn't really been thinking of a custom built bike, but found a builder through this site pretty close to home. I only have $1800 tops to spend...can you get a custom bike for that? I'll ask here first, I don't want to risk insulting the guy by asking him before I know the price range.

    I can't say I follow Jamis too closely, but I remember seeing the Quest for around $1100-1200 this past summer. Maybe they upped their MSRP for the '06s.

    I think Jamis make sweet bikes, you'd be really happy with the Quest. You could always start out with the full 105 that comes with it and then upgrade when you get the funds. You'll be plenty fine with the 105 componentry.

    I've been advised that the Ultegra is worth the extra, but can't speak from personal experience...what can you tell me?

    My old bike had 105/Tiagra (2003), and my current bike has 2005 ultegra. I can definitely say there's a difference, however, it's not a huge one. I think if you went with a 105 bike, you'd be plenty satisfied. Then if you wanted to put an ultegra derailleur on it next year, you could always do that. The Quest is a pretty nice frame and it comes with a nice wheelset, so I think you get a decent amount to start with.

    My philosophy is to buy a bike with a nicer frame and lesser components, and then upgrade components later as money allows. Some people may disagree with me, but that's my thinking.

    Focusing on the frame makes sense. The bike I have now has STX components, and I've never had any trouble with it. I'm sure the 105 is a step up from that. I guess I can compare the 105 to the Ultegra when I do some test rides to see if it really makes a difference to me. Looking forward to spring!

    Bianchi Vigorelli, yes. If you want to go with Campy, check out the Bianchi Veloce.

    Rivendell's bikes are steel. www.rivendellbicycles.com. Their frames are made in Japan-which means they're more expensive but I believe they're worth it.

    Surly makes good, reliable steel frames. Also, you can get a Cross Check as a built bike. The frames are versatile and solid (and not flashy - a plus for me).

    Oh yes..These are nice bikes. It was actually my first choice, but the price was too high. (Worth it, though) My friend has one and loves it.

    For $1800 you won't be able to get a full custom frame (and may not even need one). Many builders do stock frames which can be built up to suit you.
    The best value is with a pre-built production frame from jamis, Lemond etc.

    This would be my recommendation, though it'll probably be a bit out of your price range unless you're super tight with a LBS:

    Failing that, I'd check out Salsa's La Raza, which is a ridiculous deal. Gunnar's Roadie is super nice as well, particularly if you get one of their colors of the month. The Bianchi Veloce is an excellent buy, particularly if you can find a leftover '05.

    The Veloce is less with the Campy...am I getting less value? I've heard good and bad...mostly about repairs, that campy parts aren't as readily available. Any truth to that?

    You might not be able to find Campy stuff in the middle of Wyoming, but if you're close to any decent bike shop, they'll carry at least some of the basics.

    Marmalade, I see that you're in Eastern Washington. If you're in Spokane, Wheel Sport carries Bianchi - the stores on Division and the South Hill carry more Bianchis than the one in the Valley - and I've never had a problem with them getting the parts they needed to tune up my Veloce. Nice folks, too. I got my ride during a "Moonlight Madness" sale they run every August. Saved around $400 and I smile every time I ride it....so smooth. Good luck with your search.

    Hey, thanks for the heads up. I may head there if I can't get my lbs to get what I want. I've actually been in every bike shop in Spokane with flyers for a ride we put on, so I know where they all are. I'm especially glad to hear that my concerns are unfounded about the campy parts. I have no doubt they are very good components. Great! And another good word for the Bianchi Veloce. My choices are narrowing and I'm going to the bike shop with lots of info. Thanks everyone, this is the greatest site!

    If you like waterford you should look at gunnar. They make basicaly a waterford frame without lugs if I remember correctly. Good price and you can get one custom. Paintjobs are not the best but you do get what you pay for. I have had mine for a year now am I am very pleased with it.

    So, explain lugs to me. I've seen the term "double butted", "triple butted", and now you say "no lugs", I thot it was how the frame is welded together. Can you enlighten me?

    You pal's Rivendell has lugs. The tubes are held together by L shaped joining pieces. It's nice, but more exepensive to make.
