cheap/2nd hand bikes in Vancouver area

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting my hands on a good 2nd hand tourer while I'm in Vancouver. I'm roaming and will probably stay there a few weeks possibly months, and was hoping to make use of my time to get my legs back in good condition.

Apart from the usual eBay nonsense, does anyone there have ideas about some good places to find used bikes in the Vancouver area?

Many thanks for any info you might have,
    -Nick

If you are looking for a mountain bike try www.nsmb.com (heck they even have rode bikes I think)

There used to be a consignment shop on the north shore, but I think it has closed. I would also go to several of the shops and check their postings. Almost all of them have a binder with local people selling off their bikes.

    Where in Van are you?

There are a couple of touring bicycles listed on www.buysell.com. Another used site is www.usedvancouver.com and there is also the used outdoor gear Mountain Equipment Co-op site at www.mec.ca I have found the MEC site to be the best. If you find a 53 Cm Trek 520 , please let me know

Try the Bike Doctor, they have a location on Broadway right accross from MEC and also one at Kingsway off Boundary. They sometimes have sweet deals on used tourers, plus the bikes are fully tuned up and repaired.

    Beware...the website is very garish!

Thanks Maelstrom, but I'm looking at a drop-bars tourer, nothing much like a MTB.

I don't know where I'm going. Sort of floating between Victoria, Vancouver, and the general area. A floating homeless bum, so to speak

Thanks again for the extra links, all. I just noticed a DavVinci tourer in Calgary for sale at buysell.com, think I'll check it out...

There is no shop in Vancouver that compares to Cheapskates on Dunbar at 16th.

Goods are sold on a consignment basis, so stock is unpredictable, but prices drop each week so good stuff goes fast. I learned that by trying to wait and had stuff sold out from under me.

It's been a little while since I've been there because I have all I need for now, but I've bought brand new wool jerseys for $10, I bought my shoes for $9, I've bought a Dura Ace rear derailer for $40, Blacky winter bib tights (a $150 value) for $30, a Columbus SLX road frame for $150 and my current wet weather commuter (Vitus 172 tube, Campy and Shimano, Ritchy) for $180.

It's the best in town. (depending on what's in at the moment)

That place sounds sweet. I'll definitely check it out. I have an undefined amount of time in the area, so I'm in no rush - especially as I've just found my little brother's sweeet racer collecting dust here in Calgary at my mum's house.

I'll take that, fix it up (the tool removed his front brakes and one of the shifters is shot), and then I'll have the time to wait until a good tourer appears in the Vancouver area.

Many thanks for your help. Thread bookmarked, and I'll be making use of your recommendations (especially Cheapskates).
